Tripping Was NOT in My Plan...

junking, furniture, upcycled, salvaged, diy, home decor, vintage, lampshades, tables
you know those bloggers that create a plan for their blog posts?
like, a three month list of what gets published when - and including what content ?
that must be nice.
i plan my seasonal content ahead, i do - but more often than not
i find myself putting an unscheduled project together on the fly at the last minute, for one reason or another,
and it turns out SO GOOD that i just have to share it. today's post is a great example.

oh, yeah, that 'last minute' part? you could add 'by accident' to that, too.
because i nearly had an accident in my studio - and that's how this particular project came about...

continue reading to find out how my klutziness worked in my favor!

so what you are looking at here is obviously a big old vintage metal lampshade frame.

it was sitting on the floor in my studio, near my treasured mannequin.
i moved around both to clean in the corner and saw that something had slipped behind a shelf unit...
a small glass round that used to serve as a tablecloth cover on one of my mom's 'accent tables'.
(you know those cheap press board ones with three screw-in legs? yeah. those.
i threw them all out when we moved out of her old house. but i saved the glass tops)

so, i reached over, grabbed the glass round, stood up, turned around....
and tripped right over the aforementioned lampshade frame.
i didn't FALL - but i lurched and hopped, and am sure i looked really dorky.
but i managed to hold onto the glass and not fall at the same time!

HOWEVER....
after i regained my bearings and was standing there breathing hard,
i looked down and realized something:
the glass round was EXACTLY the right size to sit on top of the large lampshade frame!

yep. perfect fit! and the cotton twill ribbon wrapping on the top & bottom of the shade,
left from the original lining, keeps the glass from scratching on the metal.

...now that's a pretty 'fast, cheap & easy' way to create a unique small table!

it fits perfectly next to the old wood rocking chair in my studio,
and doesn't take up a lot of 'visual space' in the room.
(i'd use it as a display fixture up on a table in a retail store, or in a booth at a vintage show, too!)

PLEASE NOTE:
i don't recommend that you have a table like this in a home with children or large pets.
the glass is not secure, it's just sitting there - easily bumped off or tipped over.
and in a retail setting, it would need to be up off of the floor.

  1. I'm sure you looked just like me hopping around trying not to break an arm or leg! All the time! Glass and lamp.... serendipity! Love when that happens!
