we don't generally think of decorating a bathroom.
(a gut job, remodel, demolition - sure)
sometimes, though, a 'cosmetic' makeover
completed with some simple decorative accessories is enough...

as part of the process of giving my friend's house a budget-friendly new look,
i spiffed up her two powder rooms with a few basic styling tricks.

you may have noticed that i glossed over something special in my last post...
something sitting in the living room, next to the fireplace mantel.
it's a chair. it's furniture.... but it's also SO much more!
it's art. it's personalized. it's whimsy.

i'm a strong proponent of including a touch of whimsy in every room.
but what IS whimsy?

it's personality. charm. a unique 'something' that no one else has.
it could be a thing, a color, a pattern, an architectural oddity in the room
that just catches your eye the moment you walk in - and makes you smile.

when my friend mentioned an idea that she had to me,
i KNEW it would be a showstopping addition to her home.
i knew it would be the whimsy she craved and a perfect finishing touch
in her newly refreshed living room.

so we wasted no time in getting started!

and that means it's time for another budget-friendly DIY MAY-keover series!

this time, i helped a friend redecorate the farmhouse she inherited from her parents.
her Dad built it, her Mom loved it, and now it's hers...
and i wanted to help her express her own style, to make it her HOME.

she's given me permission to share the changes we made with you,

diy wood slat shade / privacy screen

fall, fall decor, fall home decor, outdoor decor, outdoor furnishings, fall patio decor, porch swing, wood slat privacy screen, wood slat shade screen, neutral fall decor, pumpkins, pumpkin decor, diy, diy projects, diy home decor, repurposed, woodcrafts, boho style, boho decor, farmhouse style, farmhouse decor, rustic decor, rustic style,
living here in the semi-desert of Southern California means we get a lot of sun.
for four years, i've been struggling with - and have tried - many ways to block that sun
so that we can enjoy our patio and backyard in the late afternoon.
but along with the sun is wind. Santa Ana winds and strong daily afternoon winds.
those winds have torn down every umbrella and shade cloth and curtain i've hung.

finally a bright idea dawned on me - make it wood!
the simple solution was to repeat another element of our landscaping
and create a wood screen to withstand wind and block the afternoon sun.

the best part of this project? it makes use of a pre-made element available at Lowes.
paired with an item i already had, it became the perfect shade screen for us -
and would work as a privacy screen, as well!

why 'seasonal' decorating?

winter, spring, summer, fall, autumn, holiday, seasonal, decorating, home decor, diy, diy decorating, seasonal decor, room makeover, restyled, decorating on the cheap
i get that question a lot: "why do you change your home decor with the season?"

it's not such a foreign concept, really. most people do this at certain points in the year -
Halloween, Christmas, Fourth of July, Easter.
they bring out decor elements that are specific to those holidays to enhance their enjoyment.
i grew up with a Mom who did that, making holidays special.

decorating for winter, spring, summer, and autumn is a similar approach...
simple, subtle changes in color and accessories can make a dramatic difference
in how a room feels, and how i live in it.

for example, the room shown above... it's filled with warm neutral hues and soft textures,
the perfect place to cozy up on a rainy fall day.
but i wouldn't want to live in it like that during a hot summer!
with a few simple changes, the mood shifts and the room feels appropriate to the season.

every season brings a new design scheme, refreshing the space and me with new energy.
and when i say 'new design scheme', i'm not talking totally redecorating a room.
i'm not advocating spending a bundle - of money OR time - several times a year.
easy changes - swapping out colorful accessories and bringing in touches of nature -
are my main methods for bringing the beauty of a new season indoors.

it doesn't take a lot of money or effort to get results like this - just imagination!

no-cost diy boho guest room decor

my home is basically a laboratory. a design 'test kitchen' of sorts.
every space is fair game for me to try out ideas,
without worrying whether or not they'll work. if not, i try a new approach!

recently i had some ideas for some new decor that would bridge summer into fall,
with a bit of a 'modern boho' vibe.
i just wasn't ready to remove all of the fun tiki style details
that we are enjoying in our main living spaces this summer.
so i took a peek into the guest room... and found a willing volunteer.
this room has been the same for four years, and it's long past time for a refresh!

i got to work and created a buncha' new projects, then restyled the room in a day.
i used what i have on hand here at home, so a whole new look didn't cost me a cent.
(all of those projects will be getting the spotlight in upcoming posts)

re-think what you already have to make your home look terrific!

we've reached the middle of the strangest summer on record,
and if you're like me, you've been home A LOT  -
maybe the spaces you've spent a lot of time in might need a refresh right about now.
since we're all enjoying the nice weather outdoors these days,
why not give your patio, porch, or deck a quick makeover? FREE?!

faux painted bamboo mirror

art, beach style, boho style, coastal style, DIY, diy decorating, faux finish, furniture, junk makeover, painting, summer, tiki style, tropical style, wall art, tropical decorating, faux bamboo, bamboo furniture, tiki style, faux painting
when we moved into this house four years ago,
our decorating modus operandi was truly 'use what you have'...
more than 90% of the furniture we used came from my mom's old house
(1% came from mine - my grandpa's dresser and my farmhouse table!)
the mirror we have in our entry hall came from the guest room at the last house,
where it matched a dresser with a 'bleached oak' finish.

honestly, i love the mirror here...
it bounces light from the kitchen into an area that is lacking light.
but mercy, the original frame! i just haven't been sure about what to DO to it.
i contemplated a simple black satin stain or paint finish at one point,
but ruled it out as being too dark for this area of our home.

then two days ago, a brainstorm hit, and in just a few hours
that mirror was made completely new using a faux paint treatment.

metal chair = magnet board!

a spur-of-the-moment solution to a project i'd been considering took over my weekend!
making a change to the black metal chair in this photo has been on my mind,
but i wasn't sure about the method. or the outcome. mostly, the permanence of it.
so it's been 'on the back burner' for awhile. um... years.
then a solution presented itself - and in less than ten minutes, i had done it!

salvaged junk potting bench

creative spaces, DIY, diy decorating, farmhouse style, fast cheap and easy, garden, furniture, industrial, junk makeover, junking, outdoors, re-purposing, rustic style, salvaged, spring, up-cycling, vintage, potting bench, galvanized metal, in the yard
spring and summer bring out my green thumb,
and having a potting bench to plant, replant, and putter around on is a necessity.

me being me, though, i'm not about to spend money on one!
i'd rather create something that is 'one of a kind' that no one else has,
re-using the junk and salvaged stuff that's already around the house...
so when i spied an unused plywood table extension in the garage,
my mind saw it as a component of a potting bench for our backyard.
so last year, i got to work on it - and because i wasn't blogging then, i never shared it here.
with gardens on everyone's mind right now, i thought it was time to remedy that!

spice it up!

winter home decor, diy decor, home decor, rustic style, farmhouse style, winter, diy, red, color, spice it up, a touch of red
if you've been following my posts over the past two weeks,
you've seen the way that the color red has made a first-time appearance in our winter home decor.
like a pinch of cayenne, ginger, or cinnamon in a great recipe,
we're enjoying the way just a touch of this hue spices up our rooms - and our moods!

that sweet little red wood birdhouse shown above was made by my grandson...
and i love having it on the sideboard in the entry hall where i see it many times a day.
the other red accents in our home are similar - just a small pop of color, but with big impact.

the best part?
i've incorporated this hue into our decor without spending much money at all!
i already had everything i used (except one red thrifted sweater and one tan & red plaid blanket),
either in the house (in cabinets & closets) or the garage (seasonal decor bins + camping gear!).

re-purposing new furniture

let's talk a bit about re-purposing furniture, shall we?
(and no, i'm not talking about using junk or chalk painting something...)
case in point: this bar in our home.

because the thing is, re-purposing furniture isn't JUST about repainting or rehabbing.
it's not always about making something old 'new'.
sometimes, it's about seeing the possibilities in a brand new piece -
and using it in a brand new WAY.

this piece was never intended to be a bar. honestly? it wasn't even sold for use in a house.
it was sold at Costco as... you aren't gonna' believe this! keep reading!

seems like every day, i see a photo on social media of tables made from wood cable spools.
it's kind of the 'orange crate' diy decor trend of the 70's reborn!

i've STILL not seen anyone do with them what *i* do with them:
pair the wood spool top with metal bases from other tables.
because, you know, i always have to do things differently than other people!
we have quite a few variations on this theme at home -

re-purpose a fire pit!

DIY, diy decorating, decorating, fire pit, furniture, garden, junk makeover, outdoors, re-purposing, summer, backyard landscaping
when we planned + designed our backyard landscape, a fire pit was on the 'must have' list.
Mom had always wanted one, and i missed the huge one on my farm.

so, we created a spot for it, and then bought a simple metal one -
no propane gas tanks to lift & carry, just something to safely burn half a firelog for an hour or so.
and we've used it exactly TWICE in the past two years.

[we live in a canyon - a DRY canyon. high temps and high winds mean high fire risk.
too high to chance it. so, we don't use the firepit.]

one day i moved a round glass tabletop being stored inside the house, and this idea sprang to mind:
take this glass tabletop and put it on the firepit!
DIY, diy decorating, decorating, fire pit, furniture, garden, junk makeover, outdoors, re-purposing, summer, backyard landscaping
i put an inch or so of pea gravel in the bottom of the firepit, to cover the blackened area
and make it look a bit more 'terrarium'-like as a table.
it's perfect for a planter and some lanterns (which look lovely at night!)
and as a place to rest a drink while sitting in the chairs visiting. and we do!

i love that we found a way to USE this piece regularly, instead of having it just sit there...
the domed screen top that normally sits on the firepit is hanging on the wall in the garage,
quickly reachable if we have conditions where a fire is possible.
DIY, diy decorating, decorating, fire pit, furniture, garden, junk makeover, outdoors, re-purposing, summer, backyard landscaping
wanna' take this idea further? plant succulents INSIDE the fire pit / table base!
if you put them in a removable tray, you'd still have the option of removing them to build a fire.

and of course, you could find a rusty ol' firepit at a yard sale or thrift shop for this project!
