but long before i ever came up with THAT one, i created another: 'SPRING in a jar'!
i'm not sure why i haven't shared them here on homewardFOUND before, but it's time to change that!

Salvaged Tabletop Herb Garden

salvaged junk project spring herb garden
you've all heard that phrase 'best laid plans', riiiiight? sigh.

last Thursday morning, as i was loading up my truck to restock the homewardFOUND shop,
i cut a very deep gash in my finger...
and it was immediately apparent that no bandaid would suffice.
it required a visit to the ER and five stitches, then being immobilized for several days.
as a result, i've been working on things behind the scenes here on the blog
(with one hand. do you know how hard it is to type with one hand?!!!)

much as i don't like accidents, there was that time a happy accident
became a spur-of-the-moment project: a tabletop herb garden...

Winter Into Spring Decor

winter spring home decor use what you have glass globes
wondering how to decorate for the change from winter into spring?
try combining the hues and textures of winter with a touch of spring flowers,
like the clear & white glass, burlap, and cherry blossom combination above.

this is a really simple way to take an everyday item and make it work as decor...
yes, those round things in the photo up above ARE what you think they are:

Tutorial: Faux Spring Blossoms

make your own faux spring flowers from paper with this tutorial from homewardFOUNDdecor.com
i don't know what kind of weather you are dealing with, my friends,
but it's so hot here in SoCal that Mother Nature is reeeeeeeally confused...
the question seems to be 'to bloom or not to bloom'
because it's not quite clear whether it's late winter, early spring, or full-blown summer.
(Olaf the snowman would love it here right now!)
in other areas, some of you poor souls are dealing with BELOW ZERO temps!

for those of us who are looking for some evidence of spring, i have a trick to share:
forget nature. make your OWN spring blossoms!!!

Have a Heart!

happy february, everyone!
five years ago, i shared a project here on the homewardFOUND blog
that began with a simple wood moss-filled garden planter.
click here to see the planter-turned-door wreath post

i found another way to use that wood planter:
i decided to re-create the look of a floral heart using PAPER!
it was simple enough to cut petals and leaves and spirals out of old sheet music + school paper,
to fold and bend and twist them into shape, gluing them along the way,
and then to tuck them into the chicken-wire of the planter.

these flowers are so simple to make... just remember your kindergarten 'cut & paste' skills,
maybe even enlist some kids to help!

Beauty in Simplicity

a quick announcement before the main part of my post today:
the homewardFOUND shop makeover is FINALLY happening!

i am so excited to finally get in there to make the changes i've envisioned...

 now... on with todays' post:
this time of year, it seems we all do a bit of cleaning and clearing,
ready to embrace the simplicity of a blank calendar and clean rooms.

i'd like to share some inspiring 'simple' decor with you, along with a story...
(you're starting to notice that this is a regular thing now, right? ;) )

once upon a time,
there were two incredibly talented men named Joe and Jermonne
who created a look that was all their own...
Barn House style.

when they came on the scene, back in the early 2000's,
there was no shiplap craze, no galvanized metal repros in every store.
there was no JoJo on HGTV,  no Restoration Hardware as we know it today...
because their designs influenced the market and all who followed.

they hosted a beautiful vintage show on their farm in the Pacific Northwest,
a gathering of great ideas, original style, and a group of fun & talented people
that drove design trends and appeared in magazines everywhere.
i have been inspired by their spirit and their aesthetic for years now,
and i'm sure you will be as well.

Tutorial: Make New Books Look Old!

here's a trick i've been using for four decades as a visual display stylist:
i shared a photo on Instagram the other day because i loved the display:
i snapped that at Roger's Gardens in Corona del Mar, California,
where i have found visual and decor inspiration galore over many years.
this photo is of a cabinet filled with old books -
only, they aren't old. they just LOOK old.
and because of my 40+ year background in retail visual merchandising & display,
i know a secret to getting the same look!

so i shared the trick in my IG post... and a few people suggested that i create an actual tutorial.
sure, i can do that! ;)
here's the quick tutorial in one easy image:
now THAT's what i call 'fast, cheap & easy'TM ;)
(ps: i posted a quick VIDEO tutorial on the hwF facebook page, too!)
