boho chic: embellished hats
i know, i know... a fashion accessory isn't exactly within my purview here at homewardFOUND.
but if you hang it on a wall or a door, it's decor. wink.
i recently dolled up one of my straw hats to wear to a party at the beach,
and it was so easy and so much fun that i decided to share it here on the blog.
i have a feeling you'll be inspired to make your own -
for your head, or as a perfect summer home accent!

a different kind of sand castle...
bringing sand and shells home from a beach vacation is do-able.
a sand castle? not so much.
unless, of course, you find a new way to make a sand castle ;)
and i did.

beach in a box!
years ago, i started filling vintage jars with seashells, and sand, and seagrass.
i call them 'Beach in a Jar' - and i sold a LOT of them at vintage shows.
saving souvenirs from vacation trips is a great way to relive summer memories...
here's a fun and easy way to use inexpensive materials and found objects
to create a 'beach in a box'
(and you really don't even have to GO on vacation to make these!)

seashell wall art
for as long as i can remember, i've collected mementos from the beach...
tiny bottles of sand, sea glass remnants, little pieces of driftwood, and seashells.
*NOTE: i DO make sure it's permissible to take these natural 'artifacts' from their locations,
and i don't take a lot. *
finding new ways to display these treasures is a fun creative exercise,
and this summer i've re-worked a former project to highlight a few of my seashells.
and yes, it's yellow! sunny, bright, warm, happy yellow for summer.

sunshine door decor
talk about sun salutations!
i was staring at some junk that was sitting in the garage the other day,
decided it looked a bit like something from a place i love,
decided it looked a bit like something from a place i love,
and came up with another way to make a sunny project
that's perfect on your front door, wall, or even garden fence!
this is an easy one to make,
using only a few pieces of metal junk, paint, a wreath hanger, and some zip ties...
*** as a matter of fact, it's SO EASY that i just RE-DID this project
with a *bit* more of the original inspiration included! ***

hello, sunshine!
summertime is here!
now that it's time to focus on sun, sand, and shenanigans,
let's bring some sunny summer vibes to your home decor!
i came up with a way to decorate a front door (or back door, or interior door!)
in just minutes with this 'fast, cheap, and easy' paint project...

farmhouse may-keover: bedroom
i've spent all month sharing the farmhouse makeover with you,
with a tour from the front porch to the powder rooms
to share ideas for a quick decor touch up.
last but not least, let's visit the main bedroom...
and guess what? since my friend is smarter than me,
there are BEFORE pics!

farmhouse may-keover: diy 'artful' chair
you may have noticed that i glossed over something special in my last post...
something sitting in the living room, next to the fireplace mantel.
it's a chair. it's furniture.... but it's also SO much more!
it's art. it's personalized. it's whimsy.
something sitting in the living room, next to the fireplace mantel.
it's a chair. it's furniture.... but it's also SO much more!
it's art. it's personalized. it's whimsy.
i'm a strong proponent of including a touch of whimsy in every room.
but what IS whimsy?
it's personality. charm. a unique 'something' that no one else has.
it could be a thing, a color, a pattern, an architectural oddity in the room
that just catches your eye the moment you walk in - and makes you smile.
when my friend mentioned an idea that she had to me,
i KNEW it would be a showstopping addition to her home.
i knew it would be the whimsy she craved and a perfect finishing touch
in her newly refreshed living room.
so we wasted no time in getting started!

send a message with stamped dishes!
sometimes an idea comes outta' nowhere.
sometimes, nature is the inspiration.
and sometimes, another creative person does something new
that makes me realize a possibility that intrigues me...
that's the case with this 'just for fun' diy project.
i saw something on social media and laughed.
then i thought 'i have a few china dishes that i could do something like that with....'
and so, i tried it just to see how it would look.
my approach is temporary art, as most of my decor projects are.
(actually, i came up with TWO ways to do this project that are temporary)
when i tire of this look, i'll be able to 'erase' it
and return the dishes to their original condition.
and when it was all done, another approach occurred to me!

be a good (repurposed) egg
last spring, i created several decor elements inspired by paint chips.
okay, okay... i basically spent most of 2020 finding creative ways to use paint chips! LOL
this year, i've pulled those out of storage and found fresh new ways to use them...
because the yellow just serendipitously fits my current color obsession perfectly
AND
because it's not necessary to have/buy/make ALL NEW things EVERY year.
(i felt a great disturbance in the force as retailers across the globe shuddered at that...)
it's fun finding new ways to use what you have!

she pegged it!
the peg rack in our entry hallway seen in my previous post
was hiding something...
behind the gray hat and yellow scarf was a really different kind of 'hook'.
it's not a hook at all, actually. it's a vintage item that i re-purposed as a hook.
it's one of my favorite projects ever, first created over a decade ago.
i've never seen anyone else do this (at least, they haven't posted it online)
and i think it's about time that i share it!

a warm welcome
addressing the change of seasons was an easy task:
color offers warmth and a happy welcome this utilitarian area.
by incorporating a few soft touches, some interesting textures and elements,
and ways to tackle the detritus that often gathers here in this 'drop zone',
it's gone from a pass-thru area to one we notice and enjoy a bit more.
as usual, i didn't spend a cent to restyle this area -
i shopped the house and pulled a new look together for nuthin'!

bee mine scrap wood sign
my unusual yellow palette for Valentine's Day combines with a honey of a theme
in this third of three related projects...
a small piece of scrap wood found in my garage became this cute sign,
which could hang on a wall or sit on a tiered tray or mantel.

'house of love' salvaged sign
every time i look at this project, i hear the song 'House of Love' in my head...
[if you're not old like me, you may not remember that song from the 90's,
recorded by friends (who later married) Amy Grant and Vince Gill.
it's an earworm, so if you want to hear it, there's a link after the post!]

diy paper hearts wall art + garland
the wreath in my last post isn't the only way i am using paper hearts!
the freebie hearts cut from magazine pages and other scrap paper in my studio
have also become wall art and a mantel garland.
this is a really easy way to add a fun seasonal touch to your home
using what you have on hand already
(that's really been my Modus Operandi through this whole pandemic)

Scrap Paper Heart Wreath
Welcome to all who are visiting in February 2025 from HomeTalk!
This post from 2021 has been updated for you,

You'll find them at the end of this post.
my penchant for paper often pays off... which is good, because i keep EVERYTHING.

You'll find them at the end of this post.
my penchant for paper often pays off... which is good, because i keep EVERYTHING.
old magazines. brochures. cards. shopping bags. even business cards if they're cute!
this past year, i've been a bit better about tearing pages out of mags instead of keeping them.
(i almost broke a drawer in my studio because it was overloaded with heavy magazines.)
so when my brain comes up with an idea for using said scrap paper
(usually at 3 in the morning)
i have a stash on hand that i can dig into, and it costs me nuthin'.
and you all know how i love making art & decor with everyday stuff!
in December, i shared a wreath like this made from old Christmas cards cut into circles.
this time, i cut paper into heart shapes - you could certainly make a heart-shaped wreath, too!
i even brought out a piece of paper that is one of the most valuable i have:
vintage. Disney. and i CUT IT UP. yeah, call me crazy.
but it's my fave part of this wreath!

winter tablescape + diy candle wrap

since my focus for this new year is 'create . decorate . celebrate',
i'm making a concerted effort to do little things for myself more often
in 'celebration' of life and home.
case in point: making an effort to make mealtime more intentional,
and setting a pretty spot to enjoy it!
cultivating this one habit is an opportunity to step away from the computer
and enjoy some nutritional food, nice music or the sounds of birds outdoors,
and moments of gratitude a few times each day.

and moments of gratitude a few times each day.
it's important to me to make space for that,
and i think often we need a reminder that we don't have to save the nice china for visitors...
we should make the effort even if it's 'just' for ourselves. we're worth it!

diy silver tray snowman
as i was placing three silver trays on my mantel (see my last post),
an idea for using them in a different way crossed my mind...
i love using unusual materials to create seasonal decor accents,
and then using & reusing them again in many ways.
this unplanned project certainly fits that M.O.!
