my home is basically a laboratory. a design 'test kitchen' of sorts.
every space is fair game for me to try out ideas,
without worrying whether or not they'll work. if not, i try a new approach!

recently i had some ideas for some new decor that would bridge summer into fall,
with a bit of a 'modern boho' vibe.
i just wasn't ready to remove all of the fun tiki style details
that we are enjoying in our main living spaces this summer.
so i took a peek into the guest room... and found a willing volunteer.
this room has been the same for four years, and it's long past time for a refresh!

i got to work and created a buncha' new projects, then restyled the room in a day.
i used what i have on hand here at home, so a whole new look didn't cost me a cent.
(all of those projects will be getting the spotlight in upcoming posts)

continue reading to see the before, during, after - and all of the details!

here's the step by step transformation...
all completed using things we already have - just using them in new ways,
so my 'shopping' was done here at home!
(it's amazing how creative you can be when you limit your options)

we purchased these linens 4 years ago when we moved in.
they have a tan reverse side, so i've used them in the 'after... keep watching!
the headboard and armoire were part of a set used in Mom & Dad's room for 35 years.
(read this post to learn why i think sets should be broken up and used in different rooms)
the 'Tuscan' lamps and half-round side table were in their office.
that tall thing in the corner is a wine opener. a hard wine cork broke it.

the gray chair is something we bought at a garage sale, but ended up not really liking.
there are two shelf units bought in a thrift store that serve as bedside tables -
they match this wood furniture style & color SO well, but are not part of the original set.
i used them for displays in my old store!

replacing the orange print linens with a white duvet & pillows made a huge difference
by reflecting more light and making the bed and room seem larger.
the previous duvet is rolled up in the basket by the armoire,
with the tan side facing out.

the gray armchair was easily covered by draping it in a white vintage chenille bedspread,
the white ceramic lamp came in from the dining room sideboard,
and the rust/orange/brown metal sculpture was simply turned around!
the lamps and painting over the bed were removed, as was the broken wine opener.

with layers of details, the room comes to life...

* a color palette of light tan, white, and varied greens offset the dark browns
of the furnishings and the ceramic tile floor.
the soft greens of a vintage chenille bedspread 'throw' and sweater accent pillow
reflect the greens in the succulents and cacti accessories.

existing tan sheer window panels were removed;
a single white cotton one, pulled to one side, was added.
(and it isn't there to be closed, so i simply used push-pins to hang it!)

clear glass accessories were selected as a counterpoint to the rustic wood furniture,
and the round shapes of the vessels 'softens' all of the square shapes & hard lines in the room.
i used them in three areas : on the bedside & chairside tables, and armoire.

rusty metal 'junk' brought in from the garden adds more round shapes and texture.
i used it in three areas: above the bed, under the table, and on the armoire.

succulents and cacti in many forms plus the rocks and gravel in the vases
add a touch of nature.

 view from the doorway...
the cool palette is restful and refreshing during our VERY hot summers & early fall.
(as i type this, it's 105 DEGREES.)

but i already have a refresh planned for this space when cooler fall days do arrive!

[ i know what you are thinking:

nothing like redecorating a guest room when NO ONE is going to visit because of this quarantine...
ah, well! we now have a room that is really enjoyable. even if only for us. i might just start napping in there. ]

here's a quick peek at some of the decorative accessories i made:

faux succulents sit inside clear glass vases on the bedside table and armoire.
they are 'planted' in several sizes of rocks
(pebbles from the Dollar Tree, gravel from our backyard fire pit area)

...and if you look closely, you'll see that one is 'planted' in a bunch of wine corks:

the two contemporary tall glass oil lamps were one of my Mom's wedding gifts,
and they add height and more sparkle to the room.

another clear glass vessel holds more gravel and some very special 'cacti'.
the artwork behind them reflects similar colors and details.
(i was going to hang it on a wall, but liked it more here)

more on both of those projects in upcoming posts...
