AUTUMN: Sweet Sweater Spookies!

Giving this happy ghost the moniker of 'Sweet Sweater Spookie' is cutting it close, since I didn't actually use a sweater to make it. But a crocheted blanket is pretty close to a knitted sweater - right?!

It's actually a very quick project, so I thought I'd share it just in time for last-minute Halloween decorating inspiration!

Continue reading for an easy ten-minute tutorial...

Materials:

* metal tomato cage - they come in many sizes, so you can make a family! This shows a large enameled cage.

* small zip tie to tie the tomato cage legs together

* strand of low-temp white mini lights (with remote control for ease) note: never use high heat incandescent lighting around fabric.

* round white plastic light cover globe (Lowes, Home Depot)

* crocheted or knit throw-size blanket in your preferred color

Method:

* Sit your wire tomato cage on the round end - which is usually the top when in your garden. Use a zip tie to pull the 3 legs together into a point.

Hang the mini lights from the pointed top - making sure that the plug end is on the bottom of the strand, so you can plug it into a power strip. ( You'll use remote control or the switch on the power strip to turn the lights on and off.)

* Place the plastic light globe onto the pointed top of the cage - right over the light strand.

* Cover the entire structure with the crocheted throw blanket, making sure that the front and sides of your 'spookie' are completely covered. It's okay if the blanket puddles around the base a bit.

To keep the blanket on the structure, you can use binder clips or clothespins to attach it to the back side of the tomato cage if needed.

* Add any accessories you prefer to your ghost...
I chose sunnies because it's still hot here! Hats, Wigs, black paper cutout eyes & smiles would work well, too.

Option:
You can also make tomato cage ghosties with patchwork quilts, colorful patterned vintage sheets, and beach towels!

I also used some of the leaves that I cut from painted book pages as accessories here, along with my favorite book when I was five, 'Happiness Is...' by Charles Schulz.

This page with fall leaves was just too perfect!
My Mom bought me this book when I was in my 30's because she saw it and remembered how much I loved it as a lil' Debby... isn't that sweet?! ๐Ÿงก

When I tucked a few leaves into the side of the sunnies, for some reason I came to see him as Coach Beard on Ted Lasso. 'Hippie vibes', maybe??!!

My sweet friend Miss K crocheted this darling throw blanket for my Mom, while I was giving K's home's farmhouse decor a makeover back in early 2021. My Mom loves the soft feel as much as the color and uses this often... and fortunately, I got this project done and photos snapped before Mom even noticed it was missing from the sofa!

I'm linking my original post sharing the first 'Sweet Sweater Spookies' I made back in 2021 below - I hope you'll give those smaller versions a try, too!

๐ŸŽƒ Happy Halloween to all who celebrate!
