my favorite seasonal decor is the kind that happens
when i'm just playing around with things in my studio - and an idea hits me.
i love using things in ways OTHER than how they were intended to be used,
both indoors and out.

these terra cotta pot mushrooms are one of the easiest things i've made,
and they are a perfect spring accent for your home AND garden spaces.

continue reading for an insanely easy tutorial to make your own versions!

here's a closer look at them...
these are small versions, measuring from 4" to 12" tall,
made from ceramic vases and clay pots from thrift & dollar stores
because that's what i had on hand!
they could easily be made using larger scale vases and any pots you choose.

assembling them is just a matter of stacking the elements with some hidden supports:

top row, from left:

● a tall fluted milk glass bud vase has a piece of fuzzy fabric tucked into the neck
to provide a soft, flexible resting spot for the clay pot on top -
which allows it to be tilted a bit.

● a medium-sized fluted ceramic vase also has some fuzzy fabric tucked into the opening,
along with two 6" wood skewers.
the fabric keeps the skewers securely in place, so the clay pot sits up high enough
for the vase's curvy shape to show up well.
they also allow for the pot to be tilted a bit.

bottom row, from left:

● the inner part of a ceramic butter bell is inverted,
then topped with tiny three milk glass bowls to hold the clay pot in place -
the hardest part of this one was finding 'risers' to hold the pot
at exactly the level i wanted to hide the rim of the butter bell insert.

● a very tiny ceramic cup (you saw it on a wreath in a previous post)
is inverted, then topped with three clear plastic 'communion' cups
to hold the tiny clay pot at just the right level
(without them, the pot covers more than half of the cup).

i just stacked these, but if you plan to make some
and then use them outdoors or in a location where they might get bumped
(like in a table centerpiece)
add a few drops of hot glue OR museum putty as you assemble,
to hold everything together.

i decided to display them gathered up on a terra cotta plant saucer
for a simple, clean, and whimsical touch in my studio this spring.

they would look darling lined up on a mantel or shelf,
interspersed with books on gardening and flowers
or tucked into a potted plant, herb garden, or flower border outdoors!

when i lived in 'the Cottage', i had a beautiful little green glazed McCoy flower pot
and OH! do i wish i still had it to make a 'shroom out of right now...
i don't, but i DO have the next best thing:
two small ceramic flower pots in mint green!
