give 'em pumpkin to talk about!

for my final 'Halloween' post, i'm sharing some costumes!
they're a bit different that what that word might cause you to expect...
because they are all for pumpkins!

i dressed up my white pumpkins in hats, glasses, bow ties, lacy ruffs, masks, crowns,
and one spectacular wig.
they're ready for the costume parade - and they serve as great inspiration

here's a full view of all of the pumpkins that i 'dressed up'...
easy as pie using accessories and items that i had on hand.

the tiara is my Mom's!
the white top hats are vintage glass vases - that you've seen me use MANY times.

the Mickey Mouse ears are the lid to a Disneyland Passholder Popcorn Bucket!

the black top hat? i bought it at Disneyland when i was a Cast Member - 
and wore it one Halloween when i was giving out candy in the D Street store!

the minion glasses came from a costume supply store,
i added paper circles inside them to look like eyes.

the lacy black 'ruff' at the base of the pumpkin is actually a miniskirt!
it came from a costume supply store years ago.
the glittery white lacy mask is one of a pair - a black one was lost :(  - 
purchased from Rogers' Gardens Haunted House about nine years ago.
and then there's THAT WIG!

this very 'Marie Antoinette'-style coiffure was inspired by another project...

when i was working as a display designer in a resale boutique store,

i turned a huge bag of white and cream skeins of yarn into a wig for a bald mannequin:

we named her 'Laurette' (the mannequin, not the wig!!)
because the store was called 'Laura's House ReSale Store'
and our sales provided funding to Laura's House, an organization serving abused women and children.

when i recently came across a bag of white yarn at a thrift shop for one dollar,

i decided to create a new version of that yarn wig.

while Laurette's wig was made by gluing & pinning yarn to a knit cap,
that was then affixed to the mannequin's bald dome with velcro strips,

this one needed more structure. so i used a white mesh wire basket from Dollar Tree as the base.

(same basket i used to make my white wire basket pumpkins - link below post).

the basket gave the wig height once perched on the pumpkin,

making the hairdo look even bigger.

i labelled this image so you can see the various kinds of yarns and trims that were used.

only one skein of yarn was unwound - the one that covers the basket.

the rest are all still in their original shapes.

the elements are held onto the wire basket with chenille stems, clothespins, and safety pins
because i didn't want to glue them together permanently.

and that works just fine for decorating a pumpkin that sits still... 

if you wanted to create a wearable wig like this,
i would suggest using my previous approach and gluing/sewing the elements
to a knit hat that will fit on your head.
