paint + paper picture frame pumpkins

creating seasonal decor accents with paint and paper is my jam.

i love taking something i already have, combining it with scraps of this and that,

adding some paint, and turning it into something new

without spending a cent.

it's 'green'/eco-friendly, no-cost, easy to do,

keeps stuff from being 'stuffed' into storage boxes until it's that season again,

and it's a great way to ensure that my decor is unique and one of a kind.

i'm able to embrace current trending looks - with my own twist.

like..... yellow. yup. still doin' my yellow thing. alllll year long!

while these photos do indeed have yellow in them,

the project is graphic black and white - which is not just perfect for Halloween,

but easily incorporated into nearly any color scheme.

or, you know, altered to fit any color scheme...

you want orange? great! swap out the black for orange!

maybe you embrace all neutrals? okay! use soft sand instead of black with white.

and if 'cute' isn't your vibe, picture these made from elegant gold frames
filled with vintage book pages or wallpaper, with gold-painted wire 'stems'.

when i got the idea to embrace a 'black and white' decor palette this fall,

i wanted to keep it simple and graphic and focused on fall more than spooky stuff.

i'm calling it 'fall-o-ween'!

this particular project makes use of some wood picture frames

that i had previously painted white and orange, to create a 'dipped' effect.

for this look, i simply painted over the orange with black matte paint.

then two pieces of paper were inserted in each frame - one white,

and a smaller piece of black patterned paper,

 cut to fit the same area as the black painted frame.

this gives the effect of a solid area of black and white on the square form.

then came the details...

in the largest frame, i inserted a piece of white paper printed with black lettering,

saying 'happy fall-o-ween'.

(i could have handpainted that onto paper, or even onto the glass, but this was easier!)

simple shapes cut from black paper become eyes and mouths on my 'pumpkins'

(they are taped to the white paper inside the frame, under the glass)

'stems' are made from two small pieces of vintage metal signs (a D and a ! )>

as well as three pieces of thick posterboard painted in white and black.

they were simply glued onto the backs of the frames - 

and i positioned them so that there are both vertical and horizontal 'pumpkins',

for interest.

the result was a happy pumpkin patch!

 

on the faux mantel in my studio, three frames gather in layers

and are accessorized with some really cool faux black 'lacy' leaves

and a very small black and white striped Sweet Sweater Pumpkin.

the same three frames, leaves, and pumpkin gather on stacks of books

in this arrangement on the credenza that forms the 'hearth' of my faux fireplace mantel.

an additional black Sweet Sweater Pumpkin joins in the fun.

these would also look cute on an entry console, sofa table, buffet,

or hung on a wall... it's a decor accent that's adaptable to wherever you need it!
