ever wondered how deb's muses work?
here's an example of the crazy ways things connect in my brain:
while in the process of cleaning up my studio
(an Herculean task, let me tell you....)
i found a plastic bag filled with some yellow paper party supplies
that i had picked up while out thrifting - and promptly forgot about!

i found a plastic bag filled with some yellow paper party supplies

the paper goods were immediately removed from the bag,
and tucked into a drawer where i keep all of the scrap paper & magazine tearsheets
so i wouldn't forget about them again - i'm in that drawer at least once a day.

just hours later, i scrolled through social media and saw a photo of a big fat bow,
thought 'that's cute', and kept scrolling. then i stopped.
in my mind, the big fat cute bow merged with the paper party supplies,
and became 'a pumpkin party' in my imagination...
pumpkins bedecked with ribbons and bows in a 'party' setting.
the combination of the two - plus some stickers and more party decor -
turned out cheerful, happy, and so easy to create
and it took me just minutes to assemble the vignette shown above...
which makes it a PERFECT last minute decor idea,
and a great 'no carve' pumpkin decorating project for kids.
to make the decor elements stand out, i used all white pumpkins.
for this big round one, i added a ceramic 'cup' over the existing resin stem
then decorated it with a fat satin bow and a length of ribbon as a 'belt'.
note: i didn't glue this on, i tacked it in place with pushpins on the back of the pumpkin.
at the base, a simple piece of white pom pom trim
sits on the yellow plastic plate beneath the pumpkin (not attached)
and some tissue paper creates a 'skirt' beneath that.

last Christmas, i create a version of 'painted ribbon' because i couldn't FIND what i wanted:
rainbow-striped ribbon where the stripes ran across the ribbon instead of lengthwise.
i wanted a 'paint chip' kind of effect, so i created it myself.
i painted this yellow gradient version in the same way, and used it for this project.

it's so simple - i just mix up as many colors as i want to use,
stretch out plain white grosgrain ribbon from Dollar Tree on a paper 'dropcloth',
tape down the edges so it won't move,
then use flat brushes to pain on each color in a pattern.
as soon as those stripes dry, i untape the ribbon, move it so the next length is in place,
and repeat the process.
i think it took me about 20 minutes to paint one whole spool of ribbon - not bad!

the pumpkin on the left got a bow and some rickrack trim - held in place with pushpins
and is topped with a fat cute satin ribbon bow.
the tiny pumpkin on the left is adorned with a few small round yellow stickers,
to create a fun polka dot pattern.
the larger pumpkin sits on a crepe paper roll 'pedestal'
and beneath them is a paper plate + a circle of yellow and white gift wrapping paper.
the pumpkin on the right has lengths of yellow grosgrain ribbon that run vertically.
i held these in place with double-stick tape at the top and bottom,
and added a fat cute satin ribbon bow on top.
the largest pumpkin got the same treatment as the smallest: tiny yellow stickers.
more white pom pom trim rings the top, and i added some tiny yellow pom poms.
a fat cute satin ribbon bow is the finishing touch.
i couldn't decide what to do with the small pumpkin on the right... so i left it alone.
i think it looks just swell sitting on top of a roll of crepe paper
on top of a polka dot 'column' (coffee mug) on top of a paper plate.

behind the pumpkins are the yellow tissue paper party decor elements
that i keep using over and over in new ways...
two flowers, one globe, and one circular fan.
it's a colorful happy gathering that is making me smile -
because 'fall-o-ween' doesn't always have to be spooky!
