this final post for august wraps up my recent succulent / cacti obsession,
which i think is a great way to bridge the hot 'summer into fall' seasonal change.

today, i'll share how i took some of the elements that i created for the
no-cost, use-what-you-have guest room makeover
and found a whole new way to use them... on the dining table.

this clean, crisp, contemporary nature-based composition
fits so many decor styles: boho, rustic, industrial, modern,
and will work indoors and outdoors to make entertaining really easy!

you'll also find a quick tutorial for making one last version
of faux succulents to decorate with.

all of the faux succulents in glass vases from the guest room were pulled into duty,
which meant i didn't have to spend money on flowers!

i used the smaller vases in the centerpiece...

a simple green fabric runner enhances the colors of the faux succulents.
that woodgrain pedestal holding one vase adds a dark counterpoint to the light palette,
and it isn't really wood at all - it's a painted ceramic piece.
it was a thrifted find that i have used in our holiday 2019 and winter 2020 decor...
here, it's actually being used upside down!

the smaller wood pedestal seen on the left is real wood... an upside down Hawaiian candle!

the larger glass vases with succulents are grouped on the sideboard behind the table,
paired with a weathered wood board to coordinate the whole look.
(i could have put another green runner on the sideboard - but didn't think of that until now).

each place setting has a pale tan placemat, to coordinate with the hues of the stones.
the green melamine dinnerware picks up on another shade of green in the succulents,
and the clear glassware echoes the clear vases.

the green fabric napkins match the runner - and i tried two ways of arranging them:
originally, i had pictured them spiraled and sitting in the bowls,
however that just didn't look right.
next, i laid them straight across the plates, under the bowls, in line with the runner.
the crisp clean linear look of that worked better with the other table components.

on the end of each napkin, there is a faux succulent. made from leaves!

there are bushes growing outside of my studio/office window, and they grow FAST.
(why the builder planted them in front of windows, i'll never know.) i trim them constantly.
one day last month, i was holding the trimmings in my hand when the idea came to me...
'these leaves could look like succulents if you put them together like you did the ribbon ones.'

so i went in and tried, and it worked! truly a trash to treasure craft.
here's a quick tutorial if you'd like to try it:

it's pretty easy:

1. cut some branches of leaves shaped similarly to those above.
tip: SHAKE THE BRANCHES OUTDOORS SO THE BUGS FALL OFF!!!

2. remove the leaves from the branches (pull or clip) and sort by similar size.

3. cut the stem end of each leaf off, 'squaring' the end for ease of gluing.
you can also cut the opposite end to make a more rounded shape, if you wish.

4. cut a small circle from carboard, posterboard, or cardstock.

5. starting with larger leaves, glue them to the small circle with hot glue or tacky glue.
repeat with medium and small sized leaves.

your first layer should be large leaves, the second layer medium leaves,
and the third layer small leaves - you may even have to cut some shorter so they fit.

tip: glue the large and medium leaves flat.
then hold the smaller leaves up a bit as you glue them,
to add more dimension to the top of the succulent.

you can use these 'fresh', as shown - or dried, which the ones in my tablescape are.
they sat flat on the sideboard for two weeks until i used them.

gravel from a fire pit area? branches from hedges? leaves from trees?
