SPRING: Revisiting the Garden Bar!

 spring,inspired by nature,garden style,re-purposing,up-cycling,furniture,on the porch,outdoors,tutorial,create a garden bar!.

Since this is the time of year when most locales have favorable weather for gardening, I'm re-visiting an old project - the one where Deb turns a folding patio bar into a potting bench! It was a fun project to create for my Mom one Mothers' Day, and I thought it might inspire you to try something similar this spring.

This particular project came about because my Mom was struggling to pot up some plants for her backyard on her glass patio table. Not the optimum surface for messy work. Not five feet away from her, against the house, stood a folding metal outdoor bar - sitting there, unused, except for large parties once or twice a year. Me? I didn't see a bar... I saw a potting bench!

I quickly dragged it over to the edge of the patio, against a shady vine wall,
set it up, gathered a few accessories and gardening staples, and the Garden Bar was born!

SPRING: Pine Cone Carrots!

spring,Easter,What Matters,wreaths,inspired by nature,painting,tutorial,pine cone carrots.

My sweet lifelong friend Kim came to So Cal on my birthday weekend, and even though it was to attend a concert, she made time to meet me for lunch. She gave me a gift that is just SO fun that I had to share it with you: I give you Pine Cone CARROTS!

Kim and her guy J teamed up to gather pinecones on her Northern California property and transform them into carrots for her spring decor. Kim followed a tutorial but she can't recall where she found it - so I'm going to do my best to give you a quick rundown of the project.

SPRING: repurpose a lampshade frame as a cloche

spring,lampshades,garden style,terra cotta pots,re-purposing,up-cycling,thrifted,Easter,DIY,diy decorating,decorating,home decor,tutorial,use a wire lampshade frame as a cloche.

My sweet aunt Diane gifted me a terra cotta bunny figure in March for my birthday, along with a lovely lunch at one of our local wineries. After the celebrating was over, I came home and created a sweet little springtime vignette starring that bunny... and I thought I'd share this idea with you, since it is SO simple to replicate!

SPRING: 'bunny ears' floral bouquet

spring,flowers,garden style,inspired by nature,Easter,DIY,diy decorating,thrifted,just for fun,bunny ears floral bouquet, tutorial.
With April's arrival, Easter draws closer... and while I like to focus on 'seasonal' decor rather than specific holidays, sometimes ideas pop up and I just have to run with them!

Back in 2023, I created a small floral project for Easter using tiny white ball flowers and some daffodil leaves. This year, I was looking at the green hydrangeas that I used in the 'floral bouquet in a purse' project shared a few weeks back, and decided to replicate that older project - in larger scale.

SPRING: 3-D dollar store seed packet art

spring,paper crafts,dollar store crafts,wall art,DIY,diy decorating,garden style,flowers,trash to treasure,tutorial,
Back in January, I picked up some garden seed packets at Dollar Tree...
three packs of green zinnia seeds, and one pack of white morning glory seeds.
And though I bought them with the express intent of crafting with them, I had NO idea what I was going to use them for. (Typical, actually).

A wreath? It's been done over and over. Mounted on sticks as garden signs? Nah.
Then I saw a green wood picture frame sitting nearby, and an idea was born!

SPRING: repurpose tea tins as planters

 winter,winter to spring decor,garden style,inspired by nature,re-purposing,up-cycling,trash to treasure,faux plants,spring,tutorial,planted tea tins.

In springtime, I focus a lot on decorating for the season with moss, plants and flowers. That includes coming up with fresh new ways to display them - and that's where this idea came from...

If you can buy food that tastes wonderful and is packaged in beautiful tin boxes that can be re-used, why wouldn't you? I not only love the intense flavors of the teas that Harney & Sons of Great Britain makes, I adore their packaging... and have found several ways to re-use the lovely tins. (This post is not an ad, or sponsored)

SPRING: re-purpose light cages as flower frogs

spring,garden style,re-purposed,thrifted,up-cycling,flowers,DIY,diy decorating,decorating,seasonal,farmhouse style,rustic style,industrial style,tutorial,.

Daffodils are my FAVORITE flower. Have been since I was a Little Debby and loved watching 'Daffy O'Dill' dance in Disney's 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Every spring, I grab bunches of them and fill up the house with sunny flowers... and while I miss being able to drive to the Skagit Valley in Washington state and get my fill of multiple varieties grown and sold in roadside 'honor stands', now I just drive to Trader Joe's Market and grab some bunches! (TJ's imports daffodils from both Skagit Valley, Washington and Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada).

The one thing I don't like about them is how the stems can end up bending and cutting off the water supply to the blooms. But now I've come up with a fun way to turn something else into a solution!

SPRING: flower-filled purse door hanger

spring,winter to spring decor,wreaths,wall art,flowers,garden style,inspired by nature,DIY,diy decorating,decorating,home decor,tutorial,re-purposed,up-cycling,spring door hanger.

March is here and spring is coming!
I'm always so glad to see the earth awaken after her winter nap, and love to use flowers and other garden references in my spring decor...

This project builds on one I've created before (linked below this post) and is an easy way to add some springtime charm to your front door or indoor walls!

WINTER: create faux 'wrapped' bulbs

white,DIY,winter to spring decor,inspired by nature,home decor,winter,dollar store crafts,re-purposed,garden style,diy decorating,up-cycling,nordic style,faux plants,faux wrapped bulbs for winter,tutorial,kokedama,nordic design
A classic trend in winter decor is a nature-focused Nordic vibe, using natural elements that celebrate winter while hinting at spring. I've always love white flowers in winter, as they reflect the idea of snow-blanketed gardens.

This year, I've created some faux versions of wrapped bulbs and nestled them in snowy white ceramic containers. This simple project has brought a winter-y feel into my studio, and will transition perfectly into spring in the coming month.

WINTER: PomPom Vases

winter,winter to spring decor,up-cycling,re-purposing,DIY,diy decorating,dollar store crafts,flowers,tutorial,home decor,thrifted,pom pom vases.
Here at the edge of the 'winter-spring' seasonal transition, I try to keep the coziness of winter's soft textures going by mixing them with elements that  start to reflect springtime.

When I picked up a remnant of some minty-green pompom trim at a fabric store's going out of biz sale, I immediately knew that I was going to do this with it...

Paired up with some smaller white pompom trim that I had from Dollar Tree, plus a thrifted curtain panel with minty green pompoms running down two sides, that new trim pulled it all together. It took just minutes for these three vases to get a new look!

WINTER: yarn ball SnowBuddies!

winter,Sweet Sweater Snowmen,just for fun,DIY,diy decorating,dollar store crafts,re-purposed,up-cycling,thrifted,tutorial,yarn ball snowbuddies.
I just have to ask: Do You Wanna' Build a Snowman?!

Since we have a bit of winter weather left (thank you Punxatawney Phil), I thought I'd share this fun new idea with you...

I dropped some yarn balls the other day, as I was taking them out of a box, and one bounced onto the top of a nearby mug (empty!). Imagine my surprise as I realized that it looked for all the world like one of my Sweet Sweater Snowmen. Only EASIER to make!

WINTER: Scrap Paper Hearts Wreath

winter,Valentine's Day,paper crafts,vintage paper,diy decorating,DIY,home decor,colorful home,trash to treasure,up-cycling,re-purposed,wreaths,wall art,tutorial,hometalk,crafting,scrap paper hearts wreath
In a bit of a coincidence, I was notified on Wednesday that one of my past project posts for Valentine's Day decor would be featured on Thursday in the HomeTalk daily email and on social media... and that project just happens to be the original version of the one in this post, which I scheduled for Friday! I bumped it to publish a *bit* earlier, so I could link this new version to the original post that the HomeTalk link will lead to.

I offer a warm welcome to all of you who are visiting from HomeTalk!

As my beloved regular readers know, I love 'making something out of nothing'. In other words, turning the contents of my trash + recycle bins into seasonal home decor accents. Making my own decor this way costs me nothing, is a fun exercise in creativity, and gives me no guilt at all when I disassemble and re-use elements from one project to another!

Let me show you how I turned scraps into Valentine's Day home decor ...

WINTER: make a faux vintage felt pennant

 winter,crafting,DIY,diy decorating,decorating,Disneyland,painting,tutorial,wall art,wreaths,just for fun,

This is another 'just for fun' project to add to your winter decor - and also one of those projects that changed course a few times!

My original inspiration for this were two photos on Instagram, shared by Jens Fresh Vintage. Jen shared shots of her antique booth winter setup, showing winter paint-by-numbers and thermoses and ski's - and vintage souvenir pennants from ski resorts:

Recalling the fun days that I had spent skiing the slopes at Northstar and Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe, I decided to make myself a felt pennant that looked old.

As you can see in the photo up above, I did not make pennants that say 'Lake Tahoe' or anything like that... I went bigger!

WINTER: diy gumball machine lamp!

winter,lighting,re-purposed,up-cycling,just for fun,glass globes,thrifted,tutorial, gumball machine.
Sometimes, you have to do a project or make a thing just for fun.

Like when you've been deep cleaning your studio/office and feel buried in the mess. (Especially when you are 'stress cleaning', am I right??) Or when an item crosses your view and a thought comes to mind "What IF...." This happens to me a lot, actually. My ADHD + rampant imagination combine and my mind is overtaken by those ideas. I can't even sleep until I try them out!

This week I unearthed a gumball machine from behind a chair in a corner. I thought it was in bins in our Shasta trailer - but no, it was tucked away just waiting to surprise me! And when I picked it up and sat it on the credenza, it ended up next to some glass lamp globes that were headed to one of the cabinet spaces of the credenza.

My brain started adding things together, and this project happened.

I just never know what's going to happen from day to day around here, I swear...

WINTER: a stylish & EASY taper candle tip

winter,winter to spring decor,white,entertaining,home decor,TOP TIPS,diy decorating,DIY,vintage paper,paper,books,candle bobeches,candle tricks.

I've decided to focus on very simple projects this month, sharing a few tips that will quickly and easily impact your decor as you warm up your winter homes.

This particular tip isn't mine - it originated with a very special shopkeeper, entertaining guru, visual stylist, decorator, and author who has been inspiring me for decades now: Ted Kennedy Watson (no, we're not related!).

Ted owns two stores in Seattle - Watson Kennedy Fine Living on Pine Avenue (across from Pike Place Market), and Watson Kennedy Fine Home on First Avenue. Both stores boast a wealth of beautiful items to enjoy in your decor and entertaining, and the displays Ted creates in the shops and the window displays are absolutely some of the best I've ever seen. I could (and did) spend hours taking in every detail in both shops during the 18 years I lived in Washington.

This particular stylist's 'trick' is SO easy - and by adding just one little detail, it makes a huge difference!

now i'm enjoying a slow, calm 'ease into the new year' approach: simple changes, adjustments, and routines that give my creative mind space to wander (and wonder!) without stressing out as i keep up with my responsibilities.

the simple rosemary wreath project that i am sharing today is something that can made in just minutes and with very little effort. (i don't know about you, but i LOVE easy DIY projects!) let me show you how easy and simply charming this project is - and how you can make it even if you don't have an herb garden.

holiday 2024: mini Christmas tree farm!

Christmas,decorating,thrifted,colorful home,holiday,Christmas Decor,diy decorating,up-cycling,trash to treasure,re-purposing,painting,DIY,tutorial,Christmas tree,paper crafts,paper,makeover,holiday mantel decor,mantel decor.
a contributing factor to this year's theme,
O CHRISTMAS TREE
was finding three gorgeous flocked trees at Target.
then i found two white ceramic trees for a buck each at a thrift shop.

all i had to do was add in a few trees i already had -
and give a few of them a makeover -
as well as make a few new trees,
and my mantel turned into a mini Christmas tree farm!

Christmas,Christmas tree,ornaments,decorating,thrifted,colorful home,holiday,Christmas Decor,diy decorating,up-cycling,trash to treasure,re-purposing,painting,DIY,tutorial,tomato cage crafts,decorating.
while most of my holiday decorating this year
involves re-using a lot of elements i already have
along with a few new things i am making,
there ARE new store-bought things in the mix...

and one of them inspired a whimsical tree:
Christmas,Christmas tree,ornaments,decorating,thrifted,colorful home,holiday,Christmas Decor,diy decorating,up-cycling,trash to treasure,re-purposing,painting,DIY,tutorial,tomato cage crafts,decorating.
i picked up a few small flocked trees at Target for $3 each.
as they sat in my studio waiting for me to use them,
i looked at that bright chartreuse green tree - and had a brainstorm.

i have a fuzzy chartreuse green microfiber blanket.
i have a few wire tomato cages. i put those two together.
and the result is a very... SEUSSICAL... tree.
which perfectly fits my 2024 theme,
O Christmas Tree

holiday 2024: diy upcycled painted ornaments

holiday,Christmas,Christmas Decor,painting,tutorial,colorful home,DIY,diy decorating,decorating,wreaths,trash to treasure,re-purposing,up-cycling,thrifted,Disneyland,painted ornaments,.
wreath number two for this year is a fun one...
i rounded up some old ornaments that i don't ever use,
and gave them a whole new look with paint.

the pattern that i painted on these ornaments
was inspired by the posterboard i've been using as a 'drop cloth':holiday,Christmas,Christmas Decor, painting, tutorial, colorful home,DIY,diy decorating, decorating, wreaths, trash to treasure,re-purposing,up-cycling,thrifted,Disneyland,painted ornaments,.
it's just splotches and swaths of paint left from many painting sessions -
which looks a lot like a current 'graffiti' paint trend
that is an easy pattern to replicate.

since my theme this holiday season is
O Christmas Tree
using ornaments in varied ways works perfectly!

follow along and let me show you how easy this is...
