HOLIDAY: Mid-Mod Ornament Wreath

I've been busily crafting unique ornaments using the vinyl placemats shared in my last post. They aren't quite ready for their debut on the blog yet, but I thought I'd share how I used ornaments to create another wreath that embraces Mid-Century Modern style (with a bit of Scandinavian vibes, too) using just ornaments and some ribbon.

Since we all know that Deb doesn't just use ornaments on trees, I grabbed a few and re-decorated my fabric-covered foam wreath that you saw in my last post!

Continue reading to see how easy it is...

I still want this wreath to be modern in feel, so there is no foliage. Foliage isn't bad - it's just tough to get the look I wanted with regular fir boughs. If I had some vintage silver branches from a foil tree, I might just have used them!

Instead, I'm using ribbons in soft green.. I pinned the lengths of ribbon to the top front of the foam wreath with straight pins before I added the ornaments. A wide swath of soft green ribbon became a bow, again pinned into place:

Adding the ornaments was a simple process of deciding what would go where - and I started with the green balls. A principle of design is that odd numbers of things please the eye more, so I used strips of white ribbon to hang them into position in an elongated triangle shape.

Once those were placed, I grabbed four of the ornaments I had made using the vinyl placemat material (I'll be sharing the tutorials for them in my next post!) and stuck the 'poinsettia flower' ornament - which I used on my previous wreath - in front of the large bow.

The other three ornaments - a round ball with leaves attached, an ogee shaped ornament made with strips of vinyl, and a small star shape cut from the vinyl added to an existing star ornament - were hung in another triangle shape from varied lengths of white ribbon.

All of the white ribbon is simply pinned into the top of the foam wreath, and doubled over to hold the ornaments securely. Because they are all lightweight and the wreath hangs indoors in my studio, I know it will hold together.

If you plan to make a wreath with hanging ornaments to put on your front door or anywhere outdoors, use unbreakable plastic or resin ornaments and ribbon that won't pull apart if it gets wet. Using chenille stems (pipe cleaners) to suspend ornaments will help support them when outdoors where wind can blow them around - you can always hang ribbons in front of the chenille stems to hide them.

The soft green metallic vintage ornaments were new to me last year, and they combine so perfectly with the green leaf print on the vinyl placemats this year...they add sparkle and light to everything I've added them to!

Here's the previous look of the wreath in my last post...

After my last post published, I realized I had forgotten to include one image! I have added it to the original post... Placing a few ornaments in with the flowers and leaves really changes the look of the wreath. See that post here.

I've finished photographing the ornaments, and am currently working on individual tutorials for the six variations I created. Stay tuned for next week's two posts to include them all!
