why i planted pvc pipes in my yard...

when we designed our backyard, we had to work with some limitations
(as all design projects do)...
turns out, 'planting' a few pvc pipes on our raised bed slope solved one!

.
we wanted shade in the yard provided by large canvas umbrellas -
but the daily high winds here tends to send them sailing off into the wild blue yonder!
this is true even when held with heavy stands. so, we came up with a solution:
permanent umbrella stands, built right into the yard.

this close-up shows the simple mechanics of the stand:
it's an upright pipe that the umbrella pole is inserted into.

.... and all it took was some e-z mix concrete, one pvc pipe, and some spray paint!

one 10' pvc pipe was cut into 3 equal sections of 3'4" each,
measured to provide enough pipe in the ground to secure it and enough pipe above ground
to hold the umbrella pole without covering the metal hinge/coupler on the pole.
the pipes were placed in our raised flowerbed behind the stackstone retaining wall,
 to provide shade where needed.

e-z mix concrete secures each pipe in the ground permanently,
and a quick spray of matte brown paint makes the pipes blend in with the brown bark ground cover on the slope.

when we need to use the umbrellas,
all we have to do is slide the umbrella pole into the holder and open it up.
it's snug enough and tall enough to hold onto the pole,
so those strong winds won't pull the umbrella up and out.

oh, btw: total material cost for all three of these was about $20. wink.
