wood ladder easel

in a recent post, i shared this 'found and foraged flag' project.
what i didn't share was the way i've chosen to display that flag art in my office:
on a ladder. oh, but it's not just ANY old ladder!

continue reading to see how i modified it in just two easy steps...

across the front of the 'step' side of the ladder, a 2X2 wood piece was screwed on horizontally.
this one is pretty wide, because of the original purpose for this easel (more on that later),
but you could certainly use a piece that is smaller in width.

two shelf support brackets were screwed on to that 2X2 wood piece, just outside the ladder legs.

my salvaged wood flag sits on top of the 2X2 wood piece, leans back against the ladder legs,
and the brackets keep it from sliding forward and off of the easel.

i've used this easel for years...
to display my homewardFOUND signs at shows and in my former shop location.
i've used it to hold paintings, inspiration boards, and other art in my home -
in fact, this project was actually created back in 1995!

i had been commissioned to paint a very red race car on a very large canvas.
i was a muralist, so painting on canvas was new to me. and i didn't have an easel.
what i DID have was this ladder - my Grandpa Ward's ladder - and so i turned it into an easel!

it worked perfectly back then,
and i have to say that i think this flag is a perfect fit for it now.
