painted ceramic vases = faux cacti!

ideas for decorating with succulents and cacti have taken over my brain!
i've been sharing all of the details of projects completed as part of a recent
no-cost makeover of our guest room, giving it boho style,
and i hope you've been finding some inspiration for projects of your own!

the bowl of faux succulents/cacti shown above reveals another one, and it's SO easy.
continue reading to see the before & after transformation...

this project makes use of two very small ceramic pieces that i spied at Dollar Tree -
their shapes just screamed 'cactus' to me!
so i paid a whopping two bucks, took them home, and got busy...

while i don't have a tutorial for you to follow,
i will say that i painted these in a 'wet on wet' method -
that means that i painted the base color, then quickly added more colors before it dried,
working from dark shades of green on the bottom to lighter ones as i worked my way upward.
that made the varied tones of green blend into each other in a bit of a gradient,
for a more realistic effect.
i used a wide flat soft brush to get that effect.

from this viewpoint, you can see the 'gradient' paint effect -
it's a darker shade at the bottom and fades into lighter shades at the top.

after those base coats of paint dried,
i added in the details using a very small brush...
the dark and light dots represent spines on the cacti.

the bloom on the taller cactus is a fabric ranuculus flower
(also used on the pool noodle and sweet sweater succulents)

then i 'planted' them in a low, clear glass container with some gravel from our fire pit.
two faux succulents join with them, creating a small 'garden'...
the vessel sits on the table beside the chair in our guest room,
and pairs perfectly with the paper faux cacti wall art i created!

i was thinking about what other items could be used to create faux cacti like this...
how about those small glass OUI yogurt containers?
Starbucks frappacino bottles?
glass or plastic salt & pepper shakers?

look around... you might be surprised what you find in your own home
that can be transformed into a fresh new decor accent!
