color offers warmth and a happy welcome this utilitarian area.
by incorporating a few soft touches, some interesting textures and elements,
and ways to tackle the detritus that often gathers here in this 'drop zone',
it's gone from a pass-thru area to one we notice and enjoy a bit more.
as usual, i didn't spend a cent to restyle this area -
i shopped the house and pulled a new look together for nuthin'!
the table was a thrifted find, and is lightweight and easy to move from room to room.
it works well here for spring & summer.
there is an overhead light - but honestly, it's very harsh. i'm not a fan.
so adding a table lamp that will cast a warm glow
makes this a much more cozy and welcoming spot.
a simple chair in a white linen cover adds a spot to sit and put on shoes,
while the fabric helps to soften the hard lines in this space.
the wall 'art' is just an old cupboard door that i keep changing...
it has been painted and repainted and had stuff glued onto it ad infinitum.
leave some empty hooks so that guests have a spot to hang their coats.
(i know, it's been FOREVER since any of us have had house guests...)
the pegrack on the wall is my favorite feature!
we bought the old, weathered wood porch post - which was already cut in half! -
at a local barn sale. (from Peggy at Down Home Country in Corona, California)
then we searched high and low for interesting hooks to add to it...on the far left side of the piece are these two matching silver hooks. not old, just look it!
on the far right side, we found three hooks with ceramic letters on them - to spell JOY.
when we moved into this house, we decided that the name of our home would be 'Joy'...
there are numerous references to that in the house, both seen and unseen.
the two hooks in the center of the pegrack are new:
the 'faucet' hook is new - i wanted to use a real faucet but this was way easier!
the white hook was actually a darker ivory when we found it, so i painted it white.
there's another kind of hook under the gray hat - but i'll save that reveal for my next post.
it's a fun idea that i used in the past.
then i added a few enamel buckets to help it work a bit harder,
hanging one by the bail handle and the other from a length of ribbon
so it would hang a bit lower, for interest.
another bucket on the table top holds mail,
and hidden in the cute lunch pail beneath the table there's a rag to wipe off shoes!
i hope you can see how easy it is to freshen up a small area like this seasonally...
and will look around your home to see how you can try it, too!
