rummaging through a cabinet one day, i rediscovered four screen food covers.
they came from Dollar Tree and to be honest, i don't think we've ever used them.
so.... me being me.... it was time to turn these unused items into something else.

continue reading to see how easily i transformed them into pumpkins!
(i feel a bit like the Fairy Godmother in reverse.....)

the very plain metal screen domes were easily spray painted vibrant orange,
then a bead of hot glue held two covers together to form a round shape.
another spray of paint covered the visible glue on the seams.

next, i created some leaves out of a scrap of window screening:

a cookie cutter provided the template for the leaf shapes -
in some cases, i traced the whole leaf. in others, only a part of it.
this gave me some variation to work with.

the process: trace, cut out, then paint with plain old craft paints.
i stippled two shades of green - light and medium - to get some dimension.
tip: after painting, use a pin to lift the screen leaves up off of the paper
so they don't stick when the paint dries.

after they dried, i threaded green chenille stems / pipe cleaners through them as 'veins'
that gave support to the screen, so i was able to bend and twist the leaves,
to create more realistic shapes.

then i attached them to the pumpkins:

attaching the leaves was as simple as using a few more chenille stems
and twining them around that plastic loop handle / 'stem'.

the result is these funky junky pumpkins!

one of the best things about these is that they'll work perfectly outdoors...
and likely get a natural rusty effect in the process!

okay, i know i'm really going out on a limb here, but while typing this post
i got a CRAZY idea:
you could make some HUGEmongous pumpkins by repurposing old Weber barbecues!!!

if you try it, let me know!

  1. Great idea for food domes! I never saw a pumpkin until seeing this and now I'll never look at them the same again. LOL
