grocery store flower + herb bouquet

welcome, August!
this last month of the summer season always slows me down.
i find myself taking more walks, reading more books, just enjoying the 'now'
instead of constantly planning and making lists for all that is coming in the future...
and isn't that what summer is all about? being in the moment? enjoying life?

i take it easy when it comes to decor, as well. take flowers, for example...
combining a grocery store bunch of mixed flowers with a handful of fresh herbs from my garden,
i quickly created a stylish and fragrant late-summer bouquet!

in a project like this, i always start by separating the store-bought bunch...
i pull out all the greens and filler, then place flowers in a row according to size.

then i begin arranging by creating the 'base' that will hold everything upright - the greens.
a couple of tall leafy stems went into the mason jar vase, then the herbs that i cut from the garden -
spiky rosemary, leafy sage and basil (and OH they smell good!)

next, the small flowers were tucked in - here, it's the kermit mums.
i finished up with the larger flowers - the white stem with two casablanca lilies.
babies breath around the edges added a final touch to the monochromatic green + white palette.

that being said, i have to mention what i didn't choose:
the purple asters, hot pink gerberas, and yellow roses that were also in the store bouquet.
those went into another vase with a sprig of lemon leaf for a happy little mini-bouquet for the guest room.
just because a store bouquet looks a certain way doesn't mean you have to USE it that way!
take it apart and make several smaller arrangements...
adding foliage from your yard can really stretch the use you get from a $10 purchase.
(and that's smart decorating, my friends!)

the herbs in this arrangement will last a long time,
so next week i will replace the mums and lily with some white sunflowers -
to ease myself into the idea of the rapidly approaching fall!
