deb's top tree lighting tip

When it comes to lighting the Christmas tree at home, I'm a purist...
I like white lights: Mini, C7, C9, bubble, whatever kind I use, they are white.
Maybe you like multicolor - or ONE color!

Whatever your preference is,
I have a tip for you when it comes to lighting the tree
(and how many of you are tackling THAT job this weekend?!)
that is guaranteed to up the sparkle factor!

continue reading to see what my ONE STEP TRICK is!

All you need for this is one EXTRA strand of 100 mini lights to match the color of lights on your tree.

You're going to take that one strand -
and you can double it over like I did in the photos here, or run it up then down the trunk -
and run it up the front of the trunk of the tree.
If your tree can be viewed from multiple sides, run THREE strands up three sides of the trunk instead.
Start at the bottom, and work the strand of lights between the inner branches as far up as you can... you don't have to go all the way to the top,
since the lights on the branches sit closer together there.

PS: make SURE that the plug is on the end closest to the floor!

Attach the top of the strand to the trunk with a zip tie or wire, to hold it in place.
Because it runs right up the trunk,
My best advice is to add this strand of lights before you add lights & decor to the rest of the tree.

And once you plug it in...
...the extra lights glow deep INSIDE the tree branches,  getting rid of dark shadows and 'holes'!
Once you hang your ornaments on it, the extra light will make them sparkle and shine
even more than they usually do!

I've used this simple trick for over 30 years on trees that I have decorated
in retail stores & windows, in wineries, in executive residences AND at Disneyland...
and everyone comments on how bright they are!
to be honest,
I'm not sure it even needs anything but the lights.....

I'll be spending my Thanksgiving weekend decorating our trees and the house,
because there ain't anything I need that is worth going out into the craziness!! ;)

Happy Holiday Season, everyone!

  1. Wonderful tip! Thank you! I love how the lights on the tree just glow.... ahhhh I've already put up my tree, but will keep this in mind for next year for sure.... or maybe get another tree for the bedroom... hmm. :)

    1. Jan, thank you so much for taking time to leave a comment, and for letting me know that this idea will help you out next time you decorate your trees. And I had to laugh at your last sentence... that is SO me! I've been known to add a tree the week before Christmas ;) Happy Holidays!

  2. Great idea-and the tree is gorgeous!

One year I did only white lights on my tree and, honestly, it was just so pretty...but the 'kids' didn't like it. lol My daughter always does strands of green lights on the deep inside of her tree and the bright whites for regular lighting. It always gave it so much dimension. xo Diana

    1. oh my goodness, Diana, using green lights in the tree center sounds DIVINE! what a smart girl you have! and you know, my kids always lobbied for colored lights on our trees... and i only did that twice in decades. one was for a Disney tree, and one was on a tree that i let them do all by themselves! they were pretty. but i still like white lights best!!! Happy Holidays, darlin'!
