tiki garden markers

in March, we worked on the raised herb garden in the backyard,
ordering plants online from our local nursery - who offered curbside no-contact pickup of our order
during our state's 'Shelter at Home' quarantine.
social distance gardening - who knew??!

the garden needed some plant markers,
so i came up with a way to utilize an item that we have a plethora of around here.
and that worked great - for awhile.
but with the recent infusion of tiki decor in our yard,
those original plant markers just didn't fit anymore. so i gave them a makeover!

continue reading to see their old and utterly ridiculous (and FUN!) new look!

'member these wine bottle garden markers?
i liked them. they just didn't fit in once the tikis took over the yard.

so... i turned them all into mini tikis:

i can hear you laughing!
i just hope you're laughing at the mini tikis and not at me ;)

this was such an easy makeover...
all i did was paint the existing labels brown, then add tiki mask details.
the top of each bottle has the name of the plant on it.

[ and y'know, i was having SO much fun laughing while painting these
that i had to REPAINT the word 'squash' THREE times. i kept forgetting the U.
when i was all done, Mom came out to look at them and the first thing she said was
'you DO know that zucchini has TWO c's, right?'
oh, for...... well of COURSE i know that. i just FORGOT one of them, too.
so when you look at the first photo above, look closely.
i added a TINY little c inside the BIG C. so now it's spelled correctly!

full disclosure: Deb was drinking a mai tai
and listening to Hawai'ian tunes while painting these.
that could explain the spelling problems.]

these guys just make me smile. sometimes, that's enough of a reason to do something.
and that round-faced guy on the basil label? the kakamora?
(yesssss, that's another Disney reference in our decor!)
he gave me an idea for yet another project. haven't done it yet, but i will.
because there's still something missing from this garden...
can you guess what it is?

a look back at how our garden has grown so far this year:

photos snapped in mid-march and late may.
by july, this area will be completely filled in with plants!
do you have a backyard garden? what do you grow?

    1. let me give that some thought! since i painted these tiki faces directly onto the wine bottles, there is no way to scan them and make them digital. i'd have to create new ones on flat paper to do that. i've never offered my original artwork as printables before, so i'll need to look into what that entails.
