September rolls around and it's supposed to be 'everything Pumpkin Spice'.
but honestly, that's a stretch when it's still triple-digit summer heat outside -
sometimes our geographic location just doesn't vibe with popular seasonal decor
and it's time to get outta' that box!
rather than go full-on with leaves and pumpkins everywhere,
i came up with a way to use what i had on hand with a fresh look:
arranging my stash of pumpkins in a color gradient.
while the color spectrum runs from clear to brown,
arranging things this way gives a 'fall feel' with a bit of whimsy.
i honestly just grabbed every pumpkin in my storage bins
then separated them into piles of colors...
they ranged from clear, white, peach, coral to orange, persimmon, copper, rust, and brown
and are made of ceramic, glass, plastic, styrofoam, fabric, and of course sweaters!

with an arrangement like this, variation in textures adds to the effect as much as color does.
it's not ALL pumpkins - some orange ceramic votive holders join in
to serve as 'risers' lifting some pumpkins & candles up higher for interest.
the pumpkins i chose for the dining table are mostly medium to small in size
and i just played around with them until i liked the way they looked...
in a few cases, i grabbed some craft paint and gave one a touch-up
in a color that would help transition from one color group to the next.
beneath it all, simple fabric runners add to the graphic nature of this arrangement,
and the white keeps the look light at the beginning of the season.
the fabric matches some throw pillows on the sofa and awning valance on the kitchen window, tying the areas together.
i don't have a mantel to decorate - but if i did, i would have done something similar!

once the table was done, i moved on to two other focal points in our home:
the vintage scale on our kitchen island gets a fresh look every season,
always echoing the other decor details in our home.
a small grouping of white, orange, and a striped sweater pumpkin
add color and interest here without being overwhelming.
on the credenza in the entry hall, the same elements repeat...
clear, white, peach, orange, and rust pumpkins gather on a striped runner.
yep, one of my painted ping pong paddle pumpkins is in there!
the orange ceramic lamp base becomes part of the composition,
and the metal piece behind it all helps create a background.
if you look closely, you'll see that the mirror frame is white -
that reveals that this decor is from last year, because that frame is now faux bamboo!
all in all, this was an easy way to create a 'mood' without a ton of work. or money.
just using what i already had. i did that with Christmas ornaments, too!

i hope this idea helps you look at what you have in a new way
and inspires you to pull together a whole new look for the season!
