faux painted 'kintsugi' easter eggs

last fall, when i created my faux painted 'kintsugi' pumpkins,
i knew they were just a 'practice project'...
because i always envisioned that paint treatment on eggs, for Easter.

honestly, i couldn't be happier with the results!

this is a simple paint treatment with elegant results,
one that can be applied to any type of egg - paper, ceramic, wood, glass, or real eggs.

i started with some ceramic eggs that i've had for awhile,
six in a pale grayish shade of yellow.
i sprayed three of them with gloss white spray paint to prep them for this project.

then came the 'faux' part of the painting...

my go-to metallic paint is Folk Art Metallic acrylic... it covers like a dream!
i used this same thick, opaque gold paint on the art chair and footstool
that i created for my friend's farmhouse makeover last spring
(link to that post below - and this is not a sponsored post, btw)

with a tiny detail brush, i applied the gold paint in uneven lines in varying thickness
to replicate the effect of kintsugi - an ancient way of repairing broken ceramics.
search 'kintsugi' to find loads of images of the real thing to use as a painting guide.

i also took a very real eggshell and painted the inside of it gold,
with the intention to use it as an extra element in my final arrangement.

once completed, the eggs all work together -
and while there's still a hint of yellow, it is subtle.

i nestled the eggs into the handmade grass nest that i shared here in 2021,
and those gold/amber vintage beads just pick up on the gold paint hues perfectly.

i love the soft, subtle, earthy palette combined with the glimmer of gold.

i love the concept of kintsugi because of the deep meaning it holds:
that we are all fragile. easily broken. we all hide inside our shells sometimes.
and when we break wide open, we usually feel worthless and useless.
ready to be discarded on the trash heap of life.

but just as the ancient oriental artisans discovered, broken things can be mended.
kintsugi is the repair of broken pottery - even simple everyday crockery - with molten gold.
it embraces the brokenness, emphasizes the scars,
and celebrates the restoration of usefulness and value.
as a matter of fact, if you use the right thing to mend the break,
the original item can become stronger than it ever was to begin with.

Easter and Passover remind me that Jesus, Yeshua the Messiah,
is the strongest fix around.
He is the bonding agent between us and God.
He is The Way to God, to heaven, to eternal life.
He doesn't turn away from our brokenness and damage -
He opens His arms and welcomes us to His embrace, His kingdom, His grace.
His value - far more than gold - is applied to us when we accept His divinity.

and when you're broken, that acceptance is a healing balm.
it is being plucked from your suffering to be adopted into the family of God.
it is finding out that you don't belong in the trash heap of life -
you belong to the King of Kings.
when you accept Him, His worthiness makes you worthy.

i never want to forget
what God has carried me through, walked beside me through, in my life.
i never want to lose sight of all that He has done for me, in me, and through me.
(and often, in SPITE of me)

Easter is a perfect time to reflect on all of that, and be grateful to Him. and i am.

i created a vignette in my studio with the nest, eggs, and a collection of crosses
and will be sharing those salvaged crosses (and more) in my next post.
