i am always amazed by how my creative muses get my attention!
after bumping a vase and having it crash to the floor (ending up in tiny pieces),
an ancient art form came to my mind.
the 15th-Century practice of kintsugi, meaning ' to join with gold ',
is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by re-joining broken parts
with lacquer that has been mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.
the result is an elegant art form,
making the vessel stronger and more valuable than it was before breaking.
here at homewardFOUND, re-purposing and upcycling old, used, cast-off items
is my way of embracing the same philosophy - and applying it to home decor.
giving things a second chance, a new purpose, is not only budget-friendly and 'green',
but immensely satisfying from a creative standpoint.
i've applied the kintsugi aesthetic to these pumpkins for fall decorating,
and i love the way an age-old art can look so fresh and contemporary!
continue reading to see how easily you can achieve this look, too...
i applied my 'faux kintsugi' paint technique on two types of pumpkins:
left, a white glass lamp globe in a pumpkin shape.
center and right, two sizes of ceramic pumpkins.
(one has a satin painted finish, the other a high-gloss lustre glaze)
the paint application method is really simple:
gold metallic paint is applied with a very thin brush, to create the look of fine fissure lines.
application of two to three coats add opacity and texture to the lines,
creating the illusion that they are actually gold repairs on broken pottery.
TIP: if you want more pronounced texture,
stir a small bit of flour or baking soda into your gold paint to thicken it!
i studied photos online of real kintsugi as inspiration,
and saw that at narrow joints, the gold was built up into small triangular shapes -
so i applied that detail, as well.
adding more gold paint to the stems of the white ceramic pumpkins was the finishing touch.
the paint i used for this project is Plaid's Folk Art Metallic 'Pure Gold' 871
*this is NOT an ad* i share this info for your convenience,
because i am AMAZED at the fantastic coverage this paint provides!
the glass globe had a 'stem'-like top to begin with - i didn't paint that gold.
leaving it white allowed me to apply gold painted lines
all the way to the top edge of the globe and on the inside of the 'stem'
furthering the 'broken' illusion.
furthering the 'broken' illusion.
because of that open top, it is easy to place a votive candle (real or battery operated)
inside the globe for a warm, glowing effect.
they look elegant placed on a mantel, credenza, or tabletop,
and here i've combined them with white leaves cut from heavy paper
in a monochromatic arrangement
to create a style that bridges contemporary and boho modern.
to sneak my obsessive touch of yellow into this project,
i cut leaf shapes from some vintage yellow craft ribbon,
then scored and folded them lengthwise, and glued them to twigs:
then scored and folded them lengthwise, and glued them to twigs:
it's an easy project, and honestly, i prefer making leaves from paper to using real ones...
these don't dry out and crumble into a mess!
more about the art form of kintsugi:
the kintsugi technique is an extension of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi,
which sees beauty in the incomplete and value in simplicity -
a reminder to stay optimistic when things fall apart,
and to celebrate the flaws and missteps of life.
kintsugi's exact origins are unknown,
but some historians date it as far back as the late 15th century...
Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate,
is often attributed with creating this art form -
after breaking his favorite tea cup and sending it to China to get it repaired.
