after i posted my gingerbread sweater cake at the end of December,
i began seeing all kinds of 'sweater cakes' online...
i began seeing all kinds of 'sweater cakes' online...
this gorgeous image from Lion Brand Yarn came up in my IG feed
and MANY others are popping up on Pinterest -
utterly gorgeous real cakes that are frosted to look like cable knit sweaters.
i was particularly drawn to the white winter-y ones and knew i could replicate the look.
since i had everything i needed to create a faux cake,
i got busy creating my own 'Sweet Sweater' version.
and since it's still decidedly winter, i thought i'd share it here on the blog...
it's too late for more Valentine's Day decor, anyway!

i'll be honest... i wish i had a real sweater that looks as good as this wrapping paper.
but i don't. and a quick trip to a local small thrift shop didn't net me anything similar,
soo i just 'made do' with the lightweight white cotton sweater fabric that i had on hand.
as i did when making my gingerbread cake last month,
i wrapped a plastic coffee creamer tub with the sweater and pinned it all into place.
the soft cozy details were added with yarn and felt!

the loopy white yarn you've been seeing a lot of lately here on the blog
serves as a fanciful and foofy 'frosting' trim on the top and bottom of the cake.
i just pin it into place.
i created a topper using a large ball of ivory cotton yarn, a small ball of nubby white yarn,
a felt snowflake ornament, and a white snowflake cookie cutter.
on the bottom of the cake,
i used a similar ivory yarn ball and a smaller white nubby yarn ball,
along with another felt snowflake ornament.

i placed the cake on my large white platter,
and lifted that up on a white ceramic vase - surrounded by the loopy yarn wreath!
(combining pieces like this is SUCH an easy way to make a pedestal)
but that's not ALL i made...

i still had some sweater fabric and yarn left, so i made two more cakes!
i love this one, i really do!
i gathered the small end of the sweater arm with a rubber band then flipped it right-side out.
i folded the larger open end into a 'cuff', then filled the inside of the sleeve with polyfil stuffing -
there's no container in there, although you could use a bowl.
a medium-sized pom pom made from nubby yarn popped on top of the 'hat' and
one of my vintage rhinestone brooches, shaped like a snowflake, are the perfect accents.
the 'hat' cake sits on a dessert-sized plate, on top of a cup,
creating another perfectly-sized pedestal for display.

the third cake is a smaller coffee creamer container, wrapped with the sweater fabric
(in a different direction, just to add more interest to the vignette)
and then used nubby white yarn twisted together for the 'icing' trim on top & bottom.
on top of the cake, some large white pom poms surround 'Old Man Winter'

(yes, i think it's perfectly acceptable to re-purpose 'Santa' mugs as 'Old Man Winter' mugs -
especially when they are all white, like mine!)
would you make a fake sweater cake?
or how about a real cake that looks like a sweater?!
