you've heard of March Madness, yes?
i may be pushing that description by embarking on my own twist:

March Mushroom Madness!

i've had some new 'shroom ideas rolling around in my noggin' for awhile now,
and i decided that since March is my birthday month,
i can do whatever i want. so mushrooms it is!
yep, all month long, you'll see the things that have been growing
in my super-charged imagination.
(hold on tight, and keep your hands and arms inside the vehicle at all times!)

up first, my easy-peasy tutorial for making these happy mushrooms
using thrifted knit beanies and cheap ceramic vases!

continue reading for all of the details!

those two bright yellow beanies might look familiar -
you've seen me use them to create some of my Original Sweet Sweater Pumpkins
as well as holiday decor in 2021.

they are joined by two newly-thrifted knit beanies for this project,
along with some thrifted and discount store vases.

the vases on the left are small - one is a tall bud vase, the other a low one.
on the right, there's a tall yellow & white striped vase that i just snagged at a thrift shop,
and the low 'chubby' white base is actually a coffee mug!

(btw, said coffee mug has a lid. a yellow dotted MUSHROOM lid!
i saw it shared on Insta awhile back, and just HAD to order one from World Market)

here's my easy-peasy tutorial for quickly pulling these together:

what you need:
one knit cap (for small bud vases, newborn & toddler size hats work best)
a large rubber band + a small bowl (plastic, ceramic, glass) + a bud vase

how to:

1. sit the bowl inside the knit hat, covering it completely.
2. gather up the edges of the open end of the hat,
and put the rubber band around it as tightly as you can.

when i made the large versions of these,
i simply sat the hat-covered bowl on top of the vases.

for the small bud vase version,
i needed to find something that would hold the bowl up above the vase a bit.
i grabbed a thick paint pen (in purple, which i'll likely never use)
and pushed it up into the cap-covered bowl by inserting it
inside the rubber band-bound knit fabric.
then i inserted the paint pen base into the vase.

the two smallest knit beanies didn't have pom poms,
so i used two white ones that i had on hand:

the gathered knit fabric edge hides the vase top,
and looks quite a bit like the gills beneath real mushrooms!

they make a cute vignette on my studio's faux mantel
and are a perfect way to bridge the seasons of winter and spring.
(mushrooms grow all year, anyway!)
