nativitiki - times two!

tiki bar, tikis, tiki culture, tiki hut, tropical decor, happy HULAdays, home decor, diy decor, holiday home decor, holiday, nativity
my thinking is: if you're going to do a Christmas theme, do it all the way.
the TIKI tree in my last post was just the beginning of our 'happy HULA days' theme...
i also created TWO incredibly cute nativity scenes with a tiki vibe.
(oh, and that name? well, as i was painting them,
i thought to myself 'a tiki nativity. wait! nativi-tiki!' ... and it stuck!)

i laugh out loud every time i look at this nativiTIKI in our living room! it's so happy!
grab a handful of macadamia nuts and continue reading to see all the tropical details...
okay, so let's break this down into HOW it was made:

the 'manger' is a thrift store find for just $6! and no, i have no idea what it was originally intended for.
but the moment i saw it, i KNEW it was meant to be a nativity scene with tikis in it!
i didn't have to do a single thing to it, either.

baby Jesus in the manger is a wood finial,
left over from the top of the stair newel post legs on my farmhouse table
because of the round shape, i painted him like a kakamora
the diminutive Polynesian beings who wear coconuts as armor in the Disney film Moana -
but a HAPPY one, instead of the rather angry-faced ones in the film.
i also gave him one big front tooth, befitting a baby, and reflective of Olaf from Disney's Frozen.
my mind puts strange things together....

the Mary and Joseph tikis are the remnants of the other ends of those newel posts.
i'd say that the set of four stair newel posts that cost me $100 three years ago
has more than paid for itself!

a short strand of white mini lights nestled into a handful of twine remnants offers soft illumination.
the seashell angel is an ornament that i purchased in Maui last summer.

the second nativity scene that i created lives in our entry hall...

this nativitiki is made from two bamboo windchime pieces from a thrift shop
and one bamboo cylinder tea container that i had here at home.
a bit of craft paint in brown, white, and black adds fun faces evoking Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus.

the baby is nestled in a handful of twine remnants in a carved wood bowl.

there's a little more to that entry hall vignette, too:

the sign is made from a scrap of plywood and four of my giant letter tiles
simply glued together and hand-painted.
the tiki in on the side is a monkeywood bowl from a thrift store, with a painted face.
a snippet of wood trellis is tucked behind it all, along with a nightlight for a soft glow.
(you can see wood trellises with other tikis in my next post!)

i am loving the childlike lighthearted vibe of these tiki theme decorations!

please know that Christmas is a very important observance to me,
and i am not making fun of the holy family in any way...
my goal was a creative interpretation of them to bring joy into our home.
