THIS, my friends, is what our tree looks like THIS year: it's a TIKI TREE!
our 'Happy HULAdays' celebration theme has been a very BIG secret,
because my daughter and her hubby were coming to visit this past weekend.
and this whoooooole thing was a surprise for them!

now that they've seen it all, i can finally share what creative mayhem i've been up to!
(and OH my goodness, what FUN things i've made... there are SEVERAL posts coming this week)
so grab a nice mai tai or other rum drink, and click through to see the TIKI tree details...

.
let's look a bit closer at those tikis, shall we?!
from top to bottom:
on top, a Santa hat made from vintage barkcloth fabric in a mid-century mod polynesian print
tops a carved wood tiki mask.
let's look a bit closer at those tikis, shall we?!
from top to bottom:
tops a carved wood tiki mask.
that sits on top of an oval wood slice, painted to look like one of the tiki faces on an old Disneyland Tiki Room poster.
beneath that is a tall wood tiki mask, adorned with my very own puka shell necklaces from Hawaii..
each of these faces is illuminated by a nightlight, hidden beneath the tiki below it, and aimed upward.
at the bottom, is a LARGE tiki mask, illuminated by a can uplight on the floor in front of the tree.
those tiki masks might look a little bit familiar... you've seen them twice before here on the blog!
they first showed up in my backyard weekend tropical makeover post
and then again in a more recent backyard tiki punch
for the TIKI tree, i repainted the tiki masks to match our interior color scheme.
a quick spray of brown paint and then a dry-brush of a lighter tan gave them weathered texture,
then some craft paint in white, black, and orange added punchy details.
the ornaments on the tree are all ornaments that i had and have used before -
except for the addition of some new small wood 'kakamora' faces
(which i made HAPPY, because i didn't want more angry faces on the tree!)
my daughter and her hubby LOVED our theme -
they are totally into tiki culture and tiki bars, so it was a perfect fit for them.
(as i write this they are with his family down in San Diego at a tiki restaurant!)
my mom and i are enjoying the happy, fun mood of it, too.
even though Christmas has a very holy meaning to us, that doesn't mean we can't have FUN with it.
(and just WAIT until you see the nativity scene i made!)
under the tree, there were a few gifts for our guests - wrapped in tiki style, of course:
i hope this made you smile... and now that the big secret is out,
i can't wait to share MORE ways that i incorporated the tiki theme into our home this holiday season.
more posts are coming in the next few days!
(in case you haven't figured it out,
ALL of the holiday content i've shared on the blog over the past few weeks
has been from LAST Christmas!)
