in keeping with my current infatuation with the Pantone Colors of the Year 2021,
i've decided to adapt them to fit this sweet holiday!
eternally optimistic Illuminating Yellow and soothing, cozy Ultimate Gray
pair up with white in this painted diy project,
while the floral designs impart a romantic, country-fresh, sort of boho vibe.
the inspiration for this technique was inspired by two projects from last fall...
and by something of my Mom's that has always been in my life.
continue reading to see what inspired the patterns AND the before shot!
my Grandmothers' Jewel Tea 'Autumn Leaf' china pattern appears on mini pumpkins.
the pretty rose floral pattern of my Mom's wedding china inspired my Valentine's hearts,
though i interpreted the pattern in a different colorway so that i could use yellow:
the wreath of rosettes on the saucer inspired the heart-shaped placement on the large heart,
(tho the creamer's color palette matches Mom's china, that piece is a different pattern AND maker!)
as for the hearts themselves...
i primed the small white hearts with KILZ spray, then used two coats of white semigloss paint.
the galvie spray took two coats - the first one light, the second heavier to get the texture.
the thing is, this would totally work on cheap old metal tins and baking pans, too -
you don't have to buy NEW stuff to paint.
on the right, you see the finished hearts with handpainted floral elements!
the rosebud from the medium tin heart, the small rosettes from the large tin heart,
and one larger rosette on a heart painted with galvanized spray paint.
the small plastic hearts could also be hung from a garland, wreath, or chandelier.
those tiny yellow rosettes remind me of the fabric that was in my eldest daughters' nursery.
in 1980. (she's 40 now. how did THAT happen?!!!)
it's fun to adapt what we think of as 'standard' decorating ideas,
especially when it comes to holidays like Christmas and Valentine's Day...
there's certainly a color palette that manufacturers push, but we don't have to use them that way.
repainting things to fit our own homes' color scheme is an easy way to personalize!
any color - and pattern - would work for this project,
imbuing your home with the style that you love!
i hope this inspires you to find inspiration everywhere,
and to try something different from what everyone else does.

I think I fisrt fell in love with my husband when he told me his favourite colour was yellow <3
ReplyDeleteokay.... Miss Kim? i'm impressed that your husband admitted to a favorite color! men usually don't, in my experience (and even if they do, it's usually blue, brown, or green!) thank you for sharing that, it made me smile!
Deletei used yellow in my first child's nursery waaaaaay back in 1980. actually, as i was painting the small hearts with the tiny rosebuds, i realized they were just like the ones on the fabric in her nursery! i've always had a soft spot for yellow! maybe that's why i am so drawn to it right now.
Whaaaaaat?! Deb... these are incredible. I had to click and zoom in to make sure I was reading your post right. AMAZING hand done work!
