as i was placing three silver trays on my mantel (see my last post),
an idea for using them in a different way crossed my mind...

i love using unusual materials to create seasonal decor accents,
and then using & reusing them again in many ways.
this unplanned project certainly fits that M.O.!

continue reading to see how easily i turned those trays into a snowman...

the finished snowman is a fun bit of wall art, and hangs on one of my old wood doors.
making these is a breeze - and they'll pull apart later!

TUTORIAL

on the left, my three round silver trays are arranged in order of size - largest on the bottom.
to adhere them to one another, i first flipped them over
then aligned the edges so that the middle tray overlays the edges of the top & bottom trays.
a bit of hot glue on the edges of the middle tray holds all of the trays together.

after the glue dried, i added some duct tape as an extra support.

i also hot glued a small hook onto the top back of the top tray, for hanging.

to flip the trays over and not have the glue/tape bond bend,
i slid a long wood yardstick beneath all three - the top photos show the yardstick on each end.
i grabbed the yardstick and the end trays, and carefully flipped them over
then laid them back on my worktable.

you could, of course, also use plastic or galvanized metal chargers for this project.
they'd be a LOT lighter than silver!

next: time to add the details...

the hat on his head is a metal letter D, a metal ruler, a metal outlet cover, and a tea tin lid.
i glued everything to the D, added the ruler, then glued the bottom edge to the top tray.

his sweet face is made up of a tin measuring cup nose, two bottle cap eyes,
and some small white magnets form his eyeballs and mouth.

the buttons are more bottle caps. all of these are attached with a small drop of hot glue.
i also tied one of my own gray knit scarves around his 'neck', to add some texture.

when i hung him on this wood door,
i was amazed at how perfectly sized he is for this area!
i love how he adds another touch of gray to the room right now.

and then i noticed that his eyeballs are crooked. oi. best laid plans.

things change pretty fast around here, you know...
he's already had a change of wardrobe!
