since my focus for this new year is 'create . decorate . celebrate',
i'm making a concerted effort to do little things for myself more often
in 'celebration' of life and home.
case in point: making an effort to make mealtime more intentional,
and setting a pretty spot to enjoy it!
cultivating this one habit is an opportunity to step away from the computer
and enjoy some nutritional food, nice music or the sounds of birds outdoors,
and moments of gratitude a few times each day.

it's important to me to make space for that,
and i think often we need a reminder that we don't have to save the nice china for visitors...
we should make the effort even if it's 'just' for ourselves. we're worth it!

a truly simple but happy tablescape started with
a remnant from a roll of bright yellow gift wrapping paper.
stretched across the table as a runner, it creates a perfect background for white & gray elements.
(TIP: gift wrap is so cheap at places like Dollar Tree and Dollar General)

gray galvanized metal chargers pair with my white dishes -
mine came from Big Lots a few years ago, but plastic chargers can be painted!
a link to my fave galvanized metal paint tip is at the end of this post.

a small circular yellow napkin on top of the plates repeats the punch of color in the runner
and its pattern coordinates with the dotted coffee mug.
the actual napkin is a dishtowel with gray and yellow stripes on white, tying it all together.
candles add a warm feel and a flickering glow to a table - even in the daytime!

speaking of candles, isn't this one happy?
you won't believe what i made that candle wrap from...
it's a truly 'trash to treasure' project!
i cut the cup below the yellow portion, leaving extra white so i could get a really crisp edge.
then i trimmed the extra white paper off

yup. the top half of a McDonalds paper beverage cup!
i succumbed to a craving for a Coke, and pulled through Mickey D's to get one.

when i was about halfway through that cold sweet sparkly beverage,
i finally SAW the design on the cup: yellow. snowflakes. wintery.
i held it in my hand and thought 'well, i'll bet i can use this for SOMETHING!'
ended up that this cup was the perfect size to fit inside a glass candle holder,
creating a sunny yellow candle 'sleeve' that coordinates with my current decor.
this barely needs a tutorial, but here you go:i finally SAW the design on the cup: yellow. snowflakes. wintery.

i cut the cup below the yellow portion, leaving extra white so i could get a really crisp edge.
then i trimmed the extra white paper off
and slipped the bottomless paper cup 'sleeve' into the container.
next, i dropped a candle in a glass jar down inside the sleeve.
the glass container around the candle keeps the flame from being next to the paper sleeve -
essentially, there are TWO glass containers, with the paper cup 'sleeve' between them.
*** do not place a regular candle inside the paper sleeve! ***

when i light the candle, this thing just glooooows!
the glass container that i placed it in has etched vines and leaves on it,
which makes the look a bit 'frosty', too.
(i turned the container so the print on the cup doesn't show)

just goes to show ya': you can make home decor accents out of ANYTHING!
the scary part is, i think i may need more of them.
which means more trips to Mickey D's drive-thru. uh oh.
