(i almost broke a drawer in my studio because it was overloaded with heavy magazines.)
so when my brain comes up with an idea for using said scrap paper
(usually at 3 in the morning)
i have a stash on hand that i can dig into, and it costs me nuthin'.
and you all know how i love making art & decor with everyday stuff!
in December, i shared a wreath like this made from old Christmas cards cut into circles.
this time, i cut paper into heart shapes - you could certainly make a heart-shaped wreath, too!
i even brought out a piece of paper that is one of the most valuable i have:
vintage. Disney. and i CUT IT UP. yeah, call me crazy.
but it's my fave part of this wreath!
my Valentine's decor is yellow this year.
the paper shown above is all from yellow-colored ads & photo pages in magazines,
the yellow paper paint chip tree from my Christmas decor, and one vintage Disneyland ticket.
here's a lil' tip for using paper from magazines...
use a glue stick and glue the paper to another piece of paper or posterboard.
this gives it more weight and makes it firmer, easier to cut and handle without tearing.
(i either used the whole page, or cut part of the page and glued it to posterboard
before cutting out hearts.)
in the case of my very rare Disneyland D ticket,
a piece of clear packing tape on the back side provides the strength it needed.
i traced heart shapes on the BACKS of the paper, then cut them out.
it's easy to use heart-shaped cookie cutters as patterns,
so hearts are consistent in size. then i cut a few that are smaller and larger.
the paper i used in this project also includes:
striped pages from a notepad. dotted party supplies. paint chips.
once i was happy with the arrangement, pins and tiny spots of hot glue hold them in place.
it's not perfectly rounded and evenly spaced - and i like it that way.
the wreath form i used is one that you saw in my 'merry and bright!' holiday decor last year.
it's a pool noodle wreath covered in white paint chip strips,
and i attach things to it with pins so i can take them off and re-use the wreath!
i mean, i'm a D and my grandkids call me Gramma D for Disney!
the tickets i have were my Grandma Ward's, left from many family trips during my childhood.
since my Grandpa Ward helped build the Park, they are even more special to me.
that tiny heart with the words 'what we love' on it came from a Real Simple magazine
and it's just the most perfect centerpiece for this wreath that i could imagine!
so what paper do you have laying around, stacked in piles?
(how much junk mail do you get?! i get TONS. so i use it for crafting!)
start seeing what you've been overlooking,
and just think about what it could become!!!!

ReplyDeletethank you so much - you are my people, Miss Kim!!! ;)
Deletei guess i've always looked at everything as a possible art supply element... even when i was a kid, i made things out of 'nothing'. it's just how i see things! it's also a really budget-friendly, earth-conscious way to live, and that resonates with me.
So cute !
