pop art paper posies!

a recent creative challenge i am part of called for participants to share
how we've invoked the spirit of spring in our art.
well, my 'art' is craft - using re-purposed, upcycled, re-imagined materials.
and my first response was to think of my paper paint chip daffodils,
so i submitted a photo of those.

then i thought of another idea, and wanted to play with it...
since i love making somethin' outta' nuthin', i chose to use plain cardstock paper!

the result of my afternoon 'playtime with paper, paste and scissors' is something
that reminds me for all the world of pop art, like Andy Warhol's famous pixilated works.
it also makes me think of the art of Sina Trixx, an inventive design firm
(view their astounding pop art architectural creations on Instagram)

can black + white evoke springtime? yes!

ideas spring to life (pun intended!) in my head, and get translated via quick sketches...
i make doodles, really, all over sheets of paper (both sides!) while my brain noodles out
just exactly how to make this idea a reality.

once that's figured out, i grab what i need - almost always stuff that's re-used -
and i start playing around with it.
often i get so excited and in the flow of playing that i forget to take photos of the process,
but today i managed to snap a photo that shows the entire process in one frame:

so from the 'sketch' phase on the far left,
i move to the 'draw' phase where i draw outlines of flower shapes onto cardstock.
then i cut them out, and trace the outer borders with a thicker marker.
a glue stick makes quick, non-messy work of assembling the blooms,
which are actually layers of paper that evoke a dimensional flower.

i end up with a handful of the crazy black & white posies
that invaded my thoughts a few minutes earlier...

in this shot you can see the dimension of the daffodil cup, the bending leaves,
and the layers of daisy petals.

the daisy is made from
two roundish petal segments, one round center, two leaves, and a stem.

the daffodil is one large petal piece, two long leaves, a stem, and
one rectangular piece that is rolled and glued into a cylinder, then glued to the petals.
a small piece of cardstock with three 'stamens' is glued inside the cylinder.

the tulip was the easiest, as it's just one flat flower -
with some shading and scissor cuts to allow for bending it a bit.
a stem and two long leaves give dimension.

all three flowers fit into the small vase perfectly.
(i didn't plan the scale, it just worked out!!)

i had drawings for a LOT more flowers, but decided to simplify.
glad i did - the effect is appreciated because all of the details are visible...
with a huge amount of flowers, i'm not sure it would look the same.

and i REALLY like the way it looks!

yes, that tiny leaf lying beside the vase WAS intentional...
it adds another real/surreal level of detail to the arrangement.

(psssst... wanna' tip? i do that with silk/fabric faux flowers, too.
pulling a few leaves or petals off of fake flowers and letting them lie beside the vase
is a great 'trompe' l'oeil' / fool the eye trick in merchandise styling.
works even better in decorating!)

from start to finish, idea to completion, this project took about 20 minutes.
i used materials i had on hand, like scraps of paper, so it cost me nothing!

it would be a great idea for kids - even the littles can draw flowers,
then elder kids or adults can help with the cutting & gluing.

and of course, flowers come in all types, sizes, and colors...
they don't have to be black + white.

watercolor, crayons, chalk, felt pens, craft paints, even patterned papers
can add color + pattern for a brighter version of this easy craft.

there's also the benefit that these flowers don't need water, sunlight, or care.
and they can't die! LOL
now that's my kinda' decorating.....
