here's a timely project for you: turn a wall clock into a sign!

with a 'harvest time' message, it's perfect for fall decorating
inside your home or on your front door...
and a great way to re-purpose a pretty but broken clock.

continue reading for the easy-peasy details...

yes, you've seen that clock before!

i bought the clock for five bucks at a thrift shop just after we moved in,
and included it on this art gallery wall in our living room...
it was a great addition until the stupid hands started falling off every other week.
yes, really. i tried everything i could think of, and they just wouldn't stay on the clock.

so i took it down from the wall and shoved it into a closet,
thinking 'maybe i'll use this for something one day...'
that day has come!

i've turned it into a 'harvest time' sign that can also be used as a door 'wreath':

i love creating new fall accents for my home
using something i already have on hand - or can find cheap at a thrift store.
not only is it easy on the budget - no one else has it! it's always one of a kind decor!

PLUS when you make your own decor, you can personalize it...
how about 'pumpkin time',  'spooky time',
 'falloween time' or 'bewitching hour'?!

turning a wall clock into a sign is simple:

• pull the hands off (they usually slip onto a pin - and stay there. ugh.).
• with a quick wash of thin white paint, the numbers on the clock face fade out a bit.
that will make the words stand out more.
[ i carefully did this so as not to get paint on the metal frame -
remove the clock face via the back of the frame if you prefer.]

• add words by hand painting them, or by using stencils or stickers, onto the clock face.
(having the hands off the clock really helps with this)
because my lettering is done in a warm 'harvest moon' yellow tone,
i added a shadow to the side to make them stand out more crisply.

top tip: plan the lettering font, spacing, placement, and color on paper
before tracing it onto the clock face, then painting or applying stickers.

• leave the hands off of the clock, if you wish,
or re-attach them if you want the look and/or function of a working clock.
a drop of hot glue makes sure that these hands will STAY on this clock from now on!

• my clock has a 'pocket watch'-style loop at the top,
making it easy to hang on a door from a wreath hanger, as a seasonal greeting in your entry -
which is a perfect use if your clock no longer works.

• if you look closely, i set the time on the finished clock face to reflect 'harvest season':
ten o'clock. ten for the month of October!

follow those easy steps, and you'll have a new fall home decor accent in no time at all.
(see what i did there?!)
