along with our homes, i think WE deserve some 'decorative' touches for the holiday season!

my original Sweet Sweater Santa hats have been my go-to December accessory for a decade now,
and wherever i wear them they garner smiles.
so i thought i'd share my SUPER easy method for making them!

continue reading for my easy NO SEW tutorial -
PLUS some ideas for using them in other ways!

all you need for this project is:

⬤ a knit sweater in your choice of color
i recommend buying a size adult XL or XXL... this makes the sleeves bigger,
so they will fit onto the pre-made hat better.

⬤ a pre-made fake fur Santa hat
this is what gives the sweater structure to hold it up.
look for a hat with soft, full, long white fake fur trim for the best results.

remember: thrifting for crafting supplies is cheap AND earth-friendly!

⬤ a hot glue gun & glue sticks

the process is simple:
⬤ first, cut the entire sleeve off of the sweater... all the way to the shoulder and side seams.

⬤ next, pull the entire sweater arm over the Santa hat - both right side out.
uncuff the white fur trim and pull the cut end of the sleeve all the way down on the hat.

⬤ then hot glue the sweater sleeve edge to the hat right above the edge of the cuff.
when the glue dries, fold the cuff back up to cover the edge.

⬤ at the top of the hat, fold the sweater sleeve's cuff over once or twice to create a nice edge.
a few drops of hot glue just below the fur pom pom will hold it securely to the hat.

voila' - you've just created your own sweater Santa hat!
wear it with good cheer this holiday season!

there are OTHER ways you can use it, too...

how about on a wreath?!
i added a hat to this wreath made from a foam pool noodle and paper paint chips

and then when i found a fun yellow chenille ornament, i added that to it with pins!

you can also use them as tree toppers!
one of our Christmas trees featured wood tikis,
so i made a Santa hat from some vintage Hawaiian fabric for the topper:

i have to give credit for this idea to my sweet Dad,
who saw me wearing a Santa hat made from burlap
(i used to make them and sell them at vintage shows)
and then asked 'why didn't you make one out of sweaters???'
i gasped, smiled - then went straight to my studio and made one!
he gave me the thumbs-up when i showed it to him later that day,
and every time i pop that hat on my head, i smile at the memory.

and that's a big part of the holidays for me: memories.
if i can create something (or RE-create something with a new twist),
then i can capture the joy of the memory and relive it all over again.
gratitude for the many happy holidays i have experienced
is one of the best ways i can celebrate each year.

i hope this fun project puts you in a holiday mood!
