i have a photo of a bunch of green acorns as my screensaver,
and the luscious tones moved me to try and replicate them - in paint.
then i saw a video showing how to make a faux 'flocked' paint finish,
and i just HAD to try it!
continue reading to see how easy this one is...
the secret ingredient in this process is what does it...
turns plain old paint into a velvety, soft finish!
TUTORIAL
materials:
acorns - real or fake (mine are from Dollar Tree)
acrylic paint in any colors you choose . soft bristle paint brushes
cornstarch . a small spoon . a small shallow box to contain the messy part!
method:
i chose three different shades of green paint,
and followed the same process as i painted - one color at a time.
cover the acorn with a thick coat of paint,
then hold it over the cardboard box as you sprinkle
cornstarch over ALL of the painted area. (i used a spoon)
tap the crown of the acorn with the end of your spoon,
knocking off extra cornstarch.
sit the acorn SOFTLY into the box to allow it to dry -
at least five minutes. then use a soft brush to brush away all of the cornstarch,
leaving a velvety finish.
i also painted two acorns with gold metallic paint -
but the result after i brushed away the cornstarch was just.... dull.
so i poured a bit of gold paint onto my work surface,
and dabbed it onto the acorn with a fingertip.
i didn't sit these down, but held them in front of a fan to dry them.
the result is a burnished gold that pairs well with the soft greens:
i'm really happy with the way this easy process works
(and already have some upcoming projects that might make use of it!)
so, you're asking, NOW WHAT?
what do you do with velvety acorns?!
display them in a wood bowl
wire fake leaves to a branch, and hot glue acorns onto it
(those green burlap leaves are from Dollar Tree, too)
make a fake 'moss' wreath using green eyelash yarn
and wire the acorn-studded branches onto it -
then make a Sweet Sweater Nest from sweater scraps and fill it with acorns
create a fall floral arrangement as a wall hanging,
door decor, or in a standing vase, and add the branches and nest to it...
i've linked the nest, the wreath, and the faux rusty mailbox projects below!

reader Jackie left this kind comment: "These are so cute! Would be fun on a Thanksgiving table too! I am going to run to the store to get some green paint after our reconstruction guy leaves today. Thanks for sharing!!!" but one of those words was a link. i don't publish comments with links, so i'm sharing her comment this way. Jackie, thank you for visiting! (next time, no links ;) )
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tutorial Deb! I always wondered how to get that flocked texture on painted items without expensive paint kits! Hope you will share this project at the Creatively Crafty Linky party!
