but if you hang it on a wall or a door, it's decor. wink.
i recently dolled up one of my straw hats to wear to a party at the beach,
and it was so easy and so much fun that i decided to share it here on the blog.
i have a feeling you'll be inspired to make your own -
for your head, or as a perfect summer home accent!
continue reading to see how easy it is to embellish a straw hat for summer...
the hat that i embellished for a beach party came from Party City - for a whopping three dollars.
i gathered up a few simple elements and create a floral clip to make it more festive:
what i used:
a fabric hibiscus flower from a Dollar Tree bunch, a simple hair clip,
and two small paper palm leaves from a party centerpiece decor/craft kit from Target -
you'll see the rest in some of the holiday decor i will be sharing this fall!
the paper palm fronds are scored in the center, so i folded them forward
and then gently bent the ends of the fronds forward.
those were hot glued to the hair clip (four for a buck at Dollar Tree).
i pulled one pale yellow hibiscus off of a bunch from Dollar Tree,
and hot glued it to the hair clip, in the center of the palm fronds.
to attach the clip to the hat, i slid the metal prongs between a row of the raffia weave.
then i grabbed a pair of lense-less (broke 'em!) white sunglass frames
and tucked them into the raffia, to add a fun vintage beach vibe.
not only did this baby keep the sun off my very pale pink face,
i received many unexpected compliments on my 'vintage' hat!
i had a second idea for embellishment, so i grabbed another hat...
the 'hatband' is a length of cotton crochet lace,
with a strand of vintage chandelier crystals attached to it.
(years ago, i made these with wire in them as one version of my original 'junk queen crowns'TM)
they were already in a circle, so they slid right over the crown of the hat.
two yellow hibiscus are paired with two cotton thread tassels
and a bit of vintage lace as leaves to create another floral clip.
to adhere it to the hat, i clipped it to the hatband.
as usual, ALL of the embellishments on these hats are removable -
so i can use everything in another project!
(you'll be seeing these floral elements again in other projects this month, too)
as a sunny summer home decor accent - that can decorate YOU, too!
