pom poms are having a MOMENT, my friends...
showing up in the fashion world, in huge art installations, and home decor.
while most of them are WILD expressions of texture and color,
i wanted to incorporate pom poms in a more limited palette
(yesssss, i DO mean yellow! - because why not?!)
and since my recent mushroom-creating kick has led to
March Mushroom Madness
i found a way to make pom pom 'shroomies!
...continue reading to see how EASY they are!
let's start with the structure:
i used small ceramic bowls (like the kind chefs use for mise en place prep)
and small-ish ceramic items that fit the scale of the bowls:
the smallest bowl is paired with an egg cup
the medium sized bowl is paired with a 'butter bell' insert
the large bowl is paired with a tall ceramic creamer
(i inserted a large yarn pom pom into the creamer to help the bowl sit straight on top of it)
i used white ceramic pieces, but clear glass or colorful plastic would work, too!
btw, i took that photo AFTER i had staged & snapped all of the others in this post.
when i removed the 'shroomie tops from the bases,
i knocked off some of the poms :(

now, here's my way of making the 'shroom tops:
i had two goals for this: make it cute, and make it REVERSIBLE.
i use elements over and over and over, so i don't want to permanently glue it together.
because of that, i glued paper cupcake liners to the outside of the bowls,
THEN i glued the pom poms to the paper.
the easiest way i found to do this when using a glue stick (as opposed to hot glue)
is to line the inside of a bowl with pom poms -
a bowl *just* a bit bigger than the one that will be your 'shroomie top -
then cover the 'top' bowl with glue and sit it INSIDE the pom-lined bowl.
press hard. HARD. and hold. i gave mine about three minutes under pressure,
and when i lifted it out the poms were stuck quite well.
a few areas around the edge needed some glue and more poms added,
which was easy to do.
*if you use hot glue instead of a glue stick, work FAST to get the bowl inverted.
and don't burn yourself in the process!!*
once the glue dried, i placed the pom-covered bowls on top of the 'stems':
i arranged the poms differently on each 'shroomie,
using the large white poms on the largest bowl
and the tiny yellow and white poms on the smaller bowls.
i did not attach the bowl TO the 'stems', but you certainly could
using hot glue or museum putty.
gathered together on a tray with some faux grass,
they create a fun and charming spring-y scene!
(if i had one of those ceramic bunnies from Target, i'd add it...)
and yes, they've already been disassembled.
i pulled off the pom poms, then soaked the bowls in warm water
to soften the glue and release the cupcake liners. easy-peasy!

that lil' butterfly is simply a shape cut from yellow crepe paper
and mounted on a long pin:
i may not be brave enough to wear a jacket made from pom poms,
but i'll make home decor with 'em!!!!
