why not decorate for spring with mushrooms, along with the bunnies and eggs?
ah, but these are no ordinary mushrooms - these are made from eggs!
you can use REAL eggshells, as i did, or simple plastic eggs to get this whimsical result.
(i know, eggs are really pricy right now! i always save the shells to use in my garden,
but i'm always happy to turn 'trash' into 'treasure' via crafting!)

last fall, i created mushrooms using painted foam pumpkins cut in half.

this year as i contemplated ideas for spring decor projects, i thought about those
and asked myself, 'why not make miniature mushrooms using egg shell halves?'
(this is how most of my projects start... with a 'why not?'!!)
so i gave it a try, and these cuties are the result:

so i gave it a try, and these cuties are the result:
while the tops are eggs, the stem is something else related to spring.
as i went through my spring decor bins to gather elements,
i found a few other items to incorporate into this project. one of them became stems.
here's the 'how to':
first, let's do the 'prep' work - in this case, painting!
in the photo on the top left, you see two halves of a very real eggshell and two resin bunnies.
while the bunnies are cute, they're just a bit too 'country' for me... but i had an idea.
so when i painted the eggshells to use in the mushrooms (seen in the photo top right),
i also painted the bunnies - don't they look like white and milk chocolate now??!
i matched the paint colors to real chocolate, then gave each bunny two thick coats.
a fine spray of clear lacquer gives them a subtle realistic shine:
the bottom left photo shows some foam carrots i found in a bag.
after painting them with the 'white chocolate' color, i sprinkled them with white glitter (center)
and then inserted part of a wood skewer into the carrot 'tops' to assist in final assembly.
the mushrooms and bunnies needed a place to live,
and i thought of a spring 'nest' of sorts - made from a vintage ladies' hat / 'Easter bonnet'!
it's a simple pillbox style, in yellow, and i've had it for a few years...

i never shopped there, but i did enjoy studying their window displays!)

turned upside down and placed on a tray filled with faux grass,
it sets the scene for a spring tableau.
here's how assembly went:
the upside down hat needed some filler so the mushrooms would sit up high,
and i literally grabbed something that was in reach: a small yellow knit cap in my stash.
i folded the cap rim inward to 'double up' the fabric,
then flipped it over and tucked it into the hat. it created a shallow 'bowl' shape,
and i filled that with the fuzzy green eyelash yarn i like to use for 'grass' effects.

and that held them steady so that i could attach the tops of the mushrooms.
a small drop of hot glue on the 'tip' of the upside-down carrots held the egg shells on,
and the proportions of stem to cap were perfect!
NOTE: real eggshells are very fragile. if you use them and want to strengthen them,
paint the insides with white glue and let it dry before painting the outer shell.
a sprinkle of white glitter on the tops of the 'shrooms was the finishing touch
TOP TIP: i use aerosol hairspray when applying glitter -
it's easily controllable and holds like a dream!
with the milk chocolate bunny nestled inside the hat next to the mushrooms
and the larger white chocolate bunny reaching up to the side of the hat
surrounded by a few happy yellow eggs,
the tableau is a sweet scene that evokes springtime,
perfect for a dining table centerpiece or an entry hall console
for your Easter celebrations!
(just keep the kiddos from trying to eat the 'chocolate' bunnies!)
