fall has not yet 'fallen' here in Southern California,
but it's definitely pumpkin season for me!
first up, i'm sharing this incredibly easy way
to turn everyday items into pumpkins for your autumn decor...
these were made using yarn / twine skeins and thread spools.

these were made using yarn / twine skeins and thread spools.
i've embellished them a bit using elements
that go along with the 'sewing/knitting supply' theme
because i just can't leave well enough alone -
yet there is NO sewing or knitting needed for this project!

i rounded up two skeins of hemp twine and one green yarn skein
to make these, along with a few other elements...
some vintage green satin bias tape, leaves from a silk garland,
some tiny buttons, a few thread spools,
and the paper 'labels' that i previously made
for my newest glass globe pumpkins. (link below)
here are some close up shots so you can see those details:

the tiniest thread spools have small buttons glued on the tops.

another paper label is glued on the top of the brown thread spool
on the large twine pumpkin.
those paper labels are just ivory paper, cut in a circle
then embellished with a brown colored pencil.
i looked at images of old spool labels online and copied the look.

making these pumpkins is SO easy!
materials:
materials:
* several skeins of twine and/or yarn in your chosen colors and materials
(i think the thick fuzzy yarn skeins would be SO cute for this!) -
and you can pick these up CHEAP at the dollar store and thrift shops!

*spools of cotton yarn that will fit into the hole in each skein
(larger spools for larger skeins, for example)

look for these at thrift shops.
old wood thread spools are best - if your spools are new and plastic,
you can do what i did and create paper 'labels' that LOOK old
OR use a tiny button to top small spools.
* i added 'vines' and leaves to make my display more interesting,
using vintage satin seam binding and faux leaves that i already had.

lengths of yarn or twine as the 'vines' would work quite well,
as would leaves cut from fabric, felt, or picked outdoors.
assembly:
as would leaves cut from fabric, felt, or picked outdoors.
assembly:
1. place your chosen skeins of yarn and twine where you want them to sit,
with the central hole at the top of each skein.
2. insert the thread spools into the holes...
if they sink down into the hole, pull them out and put some tissue paper
or polyfil stuffing into the hole to support them.
also: if you need to add labels or buttons to the tops of your spools,
do that BEFORE inserting them into the skeins.
3. wrap the material you are using for 'vines' loosely around the spools.
(you don't have to do it to every single one).
4. tuck a few leaves into the skeins next to the spools,
making it look like they are growing on the vine,
or tuck them behind or under a skein.

my display is set on a credenza in my studio,
(there is a LOT of light for photographing my projects here)
but these would also look darling heaped into a wood bowl,
in individual teacups/small bowls, or arranged on a wood charcuterie board!

this isn't the first time i've made pumpkins using twine -
i made another version way back in 2012,using twine and string.
decidedly 'rustic' and primitive, they still work!

in case you missed my newest glass globe pumpkins
(that i originally created the paper spool labels for)
