okay, so, yesssss, i've been watching The Home Edit on Netflix. a LOT.
and yessssss, it has indeed had an influence on my Christmas decor this year.
i was also inspired by an Insta photo of a huge garland made of balloons...
that spurred the idea to create a 'garland' of colorful ornaments
that were arranged in color order.

but before we get to the actual ornaments....
the first thing i do with Christmas trees is fluff. then light them with my secret trick.
then i make sure that the tree is secured to the wall with a wire and a screw -
because ornaments can get heavy, especially on a small tree like this,
and i never want one to fall over. the mess is horrible (don't ask how i know.)
then all of that is done, i haul out ALLLLLLL of the ornaments i plan to use,
and sort them into bowls of like shapes or colors, depending on my theme.
this year, the theme is merry and bright color, so i piled the colors together on white platters...
and they look like a fabulous dessert board!!!

i saw that i was short some ornaments in a few hues, so some old resin ornaments
got a quick makeover with paint... and a bit of glitter.

the ornaments are resin, glass, plastic, silk, and paper (more about those in a coming post)
in opaque and sheer, gloss + satin + matte finishes, plain + patterned, some glittered,
add texture and interest to the 'garland'.
after that, i cut some pipe cleaners / chenille stems to use as ornament hooks

and began creating a 'garland' effect with the ornaments on the tree...
i began by placing the largest resin ornaments first, then medium resin,
then small and mini glass, then added a few glass and resin shaped ornaments.
i started decorating at the bottom of the tree,
but i'm going to show you how it looks starting at the top.

using that famous ROYGBIV rainbow order, i began with pink at the top
(btw: i didn't use purple on the tree - i skipped over it and went straight to pink)
which moves into turquoise blue, then into varied greens and yellow as you go down the tree.
yellow fades into orange, then red as the garland moves back around the left side.

a few close-ups to show you the ornament details:
they bunch together to create a dense explosion of color with 'white space' in between.
on the right lower side of the tree, there was a large space - so i filled it with white ornaments,
which doesn't throw off the rhythm of the color garland.
YES this will also work with neutrals. monochromatic colors. even clear ornaments.
because it's all about the placement and arrangement.
contrast helps, too - i don't think this would have as much visual impact on a green tree.

i have to tell you... i've decorated hundreds of Christmas trees in my lifetime,
both my own and for residential, corporate, and retail clients...
and i think this is one of my favorite trees ever!

hopefully this inspires you to look at the ornaments you have
and imagine a brand new way to combine them and arrange them on your tree this Christmas.
