switching up my holiday decor themes each year is a lot of fun,
and it doesn't cost a lot to make a change...

this white wreath was just $6 at a local thrift shop four years ago,
and i've reworked it with colorful ornaments to match my colorful tree.

most of those ornaments i already had,
a few i grabbed at thrift shops and Dollar Tree to fill out my color palette.
( all told, i spent less than ten dollars on this)
attaching them to the wreath was a quick undertaking,
and the impact is uplifting - indoors or out!

continue reading for a few wreath decorating tips...

the ornaments used are mostly unbreakable - resin, plastic, vintage satin.
i prefer those on a wreath especially if it will be hanging on a door or exterior wall.
(seriously - don't put breakable ornaments on a door wreath. you're asking for a mess)

there are a few glass ornies on this wreath, so i was careful to attach them securely.

i do that by using chenille stems - pipe cleaners - in the same color as the greenery.
in this case, white stems disappear and don't detract from the ornaments.
it's easy to position ornaments then secure them with a quick 'pinch' of the stem
around a branch or the wreath's wire armature.

when it comes to placing the ornaments, try to think outside the box... erm.... circle...
they don't have to be equally spaced, or be all over the wreath, or in a pattern.

i wanted the wreath to coordinate with the nearby tree,
but decided to place the ornaments in a different kind of roygbiv/rainbow pattern
and NOT have them cover the entire wreath...

because red is the most vibrant and eye-grabbing hue,
i started with it in the middle bottom of the wreath.

then i added the warm hues of orange, yellow, and green on one side of the wreath
and the cooler hues of purple, pink, and blue on the other side.
it's still a 'rainbow' arrangement, but it doesn't start with red on one end.
i think it's more interesting that way!

on both the tree and the wreath i decided NOT to use ribbon, to keep the look clean.

i really love how the wreath looks hanging above my faux mantel
in combination with the colorized Christmas tree.
but it won't be there long... i have more mantel decor projects to share with you!

changing up a holiday decor theme isn't hard - or expensive.

back when i was decorating wineries and executive residences for the holidays,

i stretched budgets and gave my clients fresh new looks each year
by swapping out and changing up which of their ornaments i would use together.
it's easy to change a color scheme by adding a new hue of ribbon,
or combining colors not usually used together at Christmas...

one year i chose ivory, dark green, gold, and purple for the holiday decor at a major winery,
and it was an elegant, rich look that perfectly expressed the French chateau setting
and the hues of the fine wines they produced.
everyone thought i had purchased all new decor.
nope! i had simply removed all of the bright red, kelly green, and deep burgundy tones
in ornaments & florals that had been used for years.
that made the purples and golds and ivories stand out more,
and the look was transformed.

i hope this will inspire you to take a look at your own Christmas / holiday decor elements,
and think about how you can create a whole new look this year!
