the coasters are made from silk/fabric flowers -
i pick mine up from thrift shops, garage sales, and the Dollar Tree store.

for this project, you'll want flowers that lie as flat as possible.
i made these from gerbera daisy blossoms and hibiscus blooms (from a cheap flower lei!)

in addition to the flowers you choose, you'll need:

scissors . heavy paper or thin plastic . strong glue stick or hot glue

now for the assembly... um, disassembly...

top left: remove the plastic back receptacle of the gerbera bloom,
along with the green disc that holds all of the petals onto the stem.
this flower has two large petal sections, and two small ones.
disassembling them allows the petal sections to lie flat.

top center: cut a circle smaller than the largest petal sections
from heavy paper (mine is cardstock weight) or thin plastic (like a milk jug).

center right: glue the paper/plastic circle between both large petal sections -
it should not be visible after gluing.

center left: glue the smaller sections of petals onto the top large one.

center middle : cut a small circle from the paper / plastic
center right: glue that circle to the center of the small petal section.

lower left: the petals will lie flat under a glass, and the paper / plastic adds stability.

lower center: a circle of heavy paper is glued between
two hibiscus flower sections from a flower lei.
i suggest placing the top flower so the petals are offset from the bottom layer.
no top circle is needed.

lower right: the petals lie flat under a glass stem, with the paper adding stability.

these blooming coasters look good from the side AND in a top view!
(but empty wine glasses are sad. put more wine in there!)
