summer's here, and it's time to relax and kick back.
that includes taking it easy with decor for home & parties...
so i'm sharing one of my fave summertime decorating tips.
this easy idea is a perfect happy everyday accent -
perhaps on a hallway console or dining table,
or even at your front door.

sand buckets are a summertime essential...
and this is a fun way to incorporate them into your decor!

grab a few plastic pails from your local dollar store in your chosen color,
and pop some potted flowering plants into them. done!
some plastic cups in the bottoms of the large buckets hold the plant pots up higher.
i love the way sunny happy daisies look in summer
and their yellow centers coordinate with these yellow buckets for a fun look...
how about red and blue pails with white daisies and flags for the fourth of July?!
the smallest bucket above is actually just a plastic plant pot,
with its tiers painted in white and yellow cabana stripes for a fun look.
(adding a simple pattern like stripes or dots to a vignette livens it up!)
i corralled my arrangement in a white plastic 'faux wicker' tray from the 99 Cent store,
then filled the tray with a scoop of play sand. a few real seashells add more beachy style.
while you could certainly build this on a larger scale
[perhaps down the middle of a long table,
with a beach blanket 'runner' and sand sprinkled around the buckets -
maybe even pouring OUT of a few tipped-over buckets!]
here's one reason i like using this method:
the tray can be moved anywhere i want this sunny vignette, without making a mess!
i snagged this sand from our backyard tiki bar (build INSIDE a sandbox!) and it works.
but as i was drafting this post, i remembered some tricks....
here are TWO fun 'sandy' decorating tips for you:
1. add GLITTER to the sand!
i didn't, but my daughter Jeni DOES. she's got a sandy beach in her Texas yard,
and she poured a huge container of iridescent glitter into it so that the sand sparkles in the sun!
2. as a retail & event display stylist, i discovered a substance that works perfectly
to replicate the look of beach sand for use in containers...
MALT O MEAL cereal!
yes, really! just pour it out of the box into vases or trays, add seashells,
and you've got 'faux sand' that will fool everyone.
*don't use this method outdoors, or anywhere that pets or kids can reach it.
it's not toxic, but if eaten dry it can cause digestive problems!*
i used this trick in a fabulous summer season display for a previous winery client.
look close at the fabulous glass vessels filled with sand & shells... it's NOT sand. it's cereal!
