sweaters? in SUMMER?
over the past 14 years, i've come up with all kinds of ideas using sweaters as crafting material,
and created nearly a dozen different 'Sweet Sweater' Originals...
a few of those are food: pumpkins, popcorn, ice cream - and now, pineapples!
the tropical vibes are so strong with this one,
i can almost hear the ukelele music playing...
pour yourself a mai tai or some pineapple juice
and
continue reading to for my sweet n' easy tutorial!
these are made much like my famous sweater pumpkins - only EASIER!
supplies:
a sweater, scissors, polyfil stuffing, rubber bands
i chose a sweater with a pattern, as i thought it would resemble the texture of a pineapple
tip: when thrifting for sweaters, choose XL sizes when you can - you get more for your $!
3. i used the pattern both right-side-out AND inside-out for my pineapples.
i also alternated the way the pattern ran - one is vertical, one is horizontal.
4. lay one sweater square flat, then fold in half -
you can decide which side to use, and which direction the pattern will go.
remember that you'll want the 'visible' side to be INSIDE the fold at this point.
5. sew or glue the open side (not ends) together - forming a 'tube'.
tip: for small pineapples, just cut a section of a sweater arm instead (as i do for pumpkins!)
6. don't turn them inside out YET! first, gather one end of the 'tube' and close it with a rubber band.
7. NOW flip it inside out
(middle photo shows the outside of the bottom gathered end)
and then fill it FULL of polyfil stuffing.
8. close the other end with a rubber band
(right photo shows the top gathered end)
now sit the sweater part aside for a bit as we focus on making the leaves...
i used some ivory felt that i have on hand, so i had to take some additional steps to turn it green.
if you have or get green felt, you can SKIP step B!
A. first, cut an @ 18" long strip of felt that is @ 6" wide.
then cut it so that you end up with a strip of V-shaped 'leaves' in a row
(as shown in the left side photo).
i cut larger leaves on one end of the strip, smaller leaves on the last 1/3 of the strip
to replicate the size of leaves on a real pineapple.
B. lay the strip of felt 'leaves' on paper, and paint them green.
you can spray paint them, or use a watery wash of acrylic paint as i did.
make sure you paint BOTH SIDES of the felt 'leaves'!
now, grab your sweater pineapple and let's attach the leaves...
C. starting with one end of the strip (the one with larger leaves, if you did what i did),
lay the top end of your sweater pineapple onto the felt leaves
and roll it around the 'neck' of the pineapple (above the rubber band closure).
roll it TIGHTLY! add a drop of hot glue to hold the first wrap in place as you work.
continue wrapping the felt around itself to form the pineapple 'crown'.
when you get to the end, hot glue the felt to itself to hold it.
D. you can let the leaves all point upward, or if you wish,
GENTLY begin folding some of the felt leaves out and down, around the crown.
E. if you wish, you can insert a small piece of felt and glue it in place to hide the sweater 'stem'
in the middle of the crown.
.. and there you have it, a Sweet Sweater Pineapple of your own!
of course, you can always add a little personality to them if you'd like...
truth be told, i had already taken photos of my SSP's without sunglasses
when i saw an IG post by my daughter - sharing a pretty drink served in a pineapple.
she put her sunglasses on the pineapple before she took the photo.
and well, i guess you could say the pineAPPLE doesn't fall far from the tree!
duly inspired, i grabbed a pair of sunnies, popped them onto this guy,
promptly named him Pablo, and did a re-shoot:
i love a good character... it's the Disney girl in me!
the Disney girl in me ALSO likes crowns and tiaras,
so it should be no surprise at all that i just had to try THIS move:
because even if you already have a crown growing out of your head,
adding a little sparkle is never a bad idea!
