sweater-wrapped vases

on a cold rainy fall day waaaaaay back in 2007,
i visited designer Danny Seo's blog...
and when i saw a photograph of something Danny had created, i was smitten.
the guy took old sweater sleeves and put them on clear glass vases!

i jumped up and grabbed an ivory cashmere sweater of mine
that had recently become to small for me to wear.
(i did not become too big to wear the sweater - that's my story and i'm stickin' to it!)
i cut the sleeves off of the sweater, popped them into some clear vases
then added candles and bare branches to them...
the result was a cozy grouping that warmed up my dining table.

(when i added some small pumpkins to the grouping and looked at them side by side,
i thought up the very first Original Sweet Sweater Pumpkins!)

i've made a few different versions of sweater-wrapped vases over the years,
and this year i had fun combining a few ideas.

continue reading to see how vases and ornaments and sweaters are a perfect match...

every year when i decide on my holiday decor theme, i haul out bins and boxes
and then sort through them as i choose what i'll use.
the ornaments end up sorted into bowls and trays and, yes, vases
and they look really pretty - even before i've 'done' anything with them!

well, this year, in the name of simplifying things,
i decided that the ornaments would STAY in the vases.
no tree. no wreaths, no garlands. just gleaming glass vases filled with ornaments.

and then, i wrapped the vases in sweaters!

the brightest yellow knit fabric are a knit cap and a knit headband, picked up new at a thrift shop.
the ribbed yellow fabric is the bottom band from a thrifted sweater.
the thick cable-knit fabric is two upper arms from a very large knit sweater.
and the white fabric is from a lightweight knit sweater.

each piece is simply slid onto a glass vase and then scrunched down -
sleeves were cut in half, bottom banding removed, and then pinned closed.

then i filled each vase with ornaments...

gathered all together on my faux mantel,
they sparkle and shine almost as much as a Christmas tree or garland.
without all the work!

i love finding new ways to use and enjoy things i have,
and this solution really made decorating for the holidays simple.

i've often loaded silver serving pieces and crystal bowls with ornaments
when i decorating executive homes for Christmas...
ornaments don't have to be on a tree or wreath or garland.

it's a bit hard to see, but there's a clear glass figural tree topper in that grouping.
and i have a tip for you when it comes to displaying them when they are NOT on a tree:

all it takes is a candlestick, a candle, and your tree topper:
put the candle into the candleholder. short tapers work best.
then slide the tree topper over the candle and down onto the candleholder.

the candle gives support to the glass topper,
and allows it to sit securely (since they don't fit INTO the candleholder).
just don't light the candle!!!!!

yes, i will be putting these ornaments away after Christmas.
although i've thought about replacing them with some clear ornies in the vases for winter!
