handpainted ornaments are trending this year,
so i wanted to somehow incorporate that into my sweet sweater season theme...
by using a soft yellow cable knit sweater as my inspiration,
i was able to replicate the tones and pattern onto plain white ornaments
and create decor that is unique to my own style.
along with those, i wrapped a few ornaments with sweater fabrics,
finding a way to put actual sweater pieces into the mix.
wrapping ornaments with sweater remnants is easy - but there's a trick to it!
the knit fabrics need to be thin, not bulky.
the yellow cable knit sweater that i used on the ornament above was thicker,
and it took a few frustrating moments to get it to do what i wanted!!
basically, you sit the ornament on a big circle of knit fabric,
gather it up around the 'neck' of the ornament, and tie it closed with a piece of yarn or twine.
thing is, you have to tie it TIGHTLY and very quickly!
i added some pom pom and yarn trims to each one as a finishing touch.
(of course i didn't do this one first! LOL) .
the white sweater on the right is also thin, and it even stretched a bit as i wrapped the ornie,
so it looks the best in my opinion.
now, on to the handpainted ornaments...
1. i began with plain white glass ornaments - remember, thrifted ones are great for this project!
2. laying out my soft yellow cable knit sweater remnant as a reference,
i mixed paint to match the sweater color and then painted on the simple curvy shape
that matched the cable knit pattern on the sweater. i painted two coats.
i painted three ornaments with the pattern in the middle of the ornament,
and three with the pattern at the top of the ornament -
just so they had a bit of variation.
3. adding a bit more yellow to the existing paint color,
i added thick shading to the outside edges of the curvy pattern. one coat.
4. a touch of brown added to the yellow created a darker shade,
and i painted 'shadows' onto the ornament just as i saw the shadows on the real sweater.
5. a quick swipe of white paint on the center of the pattern added the 'highlights',
just as i saw them on the real sweater.
6. a line of liquid glue and a quick sprinkle of iridescent white glitter on the outer edges
was the finishing touch, adding sparkle that will reflect lights.
to me, they resemble old-fashioned fancy Christmas candies!
very winter-y!
in case you're wondering about the way i hang them:
cut into halves, then bent into 'S' shapes.
curl one end around the loop on the ornament neck, close it,
then simply use the top loop to hang from branches, ribbons, whatever you want!
TIP: by using a color that blends into your tree - green, white - these will effectively disappear!
and they don't get stuck in your carpet when you take down your tree, either ;)
