i love creating a fresh look on our front porch for each season.
okay, it's not a porch. more like a 'vestibule' - long, narrow, and dark.
(totally impossible to photograph well, especially with dark terra cotta colored stucco walls. but i try!)

that's why it's important to me to come up with a display here that will welcome guests.
i always bring in light colors, textures, and seasonal elements.
i have a plan for this area and am searching for a large lighter element to add this spring...

for winter this year, i chose rusty metal as the starting point.
some whitewashed wood elements, rope & twine, and rustic wood crates
(ALL things that i have used here before!) combined in a 'winter' scene.

remember the tip i shared waaaay back in this post?
use a vintage metal garden hose hanger to hang your WREATHS!
i tied the old grapevine wreath ( i made it for my Mom back in 1990!) to a rusty wire fan screen,
then suspended that from the hose hanger with twine.

one spray of pinecones with burlap leaves and a rusty chain from wire garden planters
plus a cutout '2020' were added - simple details to catch the eye.
btw, that '2020' sign? cut it out of plain old cardboard. dry-brushed it with white paint. boom!
(and i JUST THIS MOMENT thought to myself

'Deb, add a clear votive cup with a battery op tealight candle to that rusty chain contraption!'!)

i debated adding our large rusty metal wine barrel rings to this composition,
hanging them on the bracket part of the hose hanger - but i like this the way it is.
sometimes the trick is knowing when to stop embellishing ;)

i didn't buy anything for this display - it's just stuff i had on hand:
i had the birdhouse planter & tall birdhouse, wood crates, metal junk, and salvaged cabinet door.
the wood plaque was dark brown, so i whitewashed it and then painted on the brown house shape.
the welcome sign was from Target about four years ago, i think.
the foliage is sprays of tiny pinecones and burlap 'holly' leaves, from Big Lots three years ago.

the entire vignette looks like this as you walk up to our door:

that long narrow space allows for one long narrow bench along one wall...
and that's what i decorate!

a few old wood crates and a salvaged vintage cabinet door
combine with a few circular rusty metal items to create a balance of square and round forms.
their neutral tones are sparked up with whitewashed wood on the birdhouse planter,
old birdhouse, and small wood plaque.

does some of that stuff look familiar?! yep, i've used them before:

in October, i used all of the round rusty metal junk as junkie punkies!
(check out that post for details on what that junk IS)

i used the crates (plus a BUNCH more) in a display with succulents on the porch last summer...
but i didn't blog about it. and now i can't find one single photo of it. ???? weird.
no problem, i plan to recreate it for spring, anyway!

truth is, i know that this may not look 'winter'-y enough to many of you.
but i live in the California desert wine country. it's never really winter here.
the snow is visible on far-off mountain peaks, and it's freezing cold at night...
but snow and snowflakes don't really feel right in decor schemes here.
then again, this time of year, neither do palm trees!
i've pulled in some bare branches for the interior decor... that's about as 'winter-y' as we get here.
